Rude And Crude?: When Teens In Your Library Respond Negatively To You, Think Back To How You Approached Them, Anthony Bernier, D. T. Herald

Anthony Bernier

Skaters, taggers, gang members, and other groups of young people are being identified all over America as problems for libraries. However, these teens respond negatively to librarians because of the way that they are approached and because they experience so much discrimination. If teen behavior needs to be changed, there needs to be a change in the way they are approached and an appeal toward their code of ethics.

Authorship Patterns In Marine Mammal Science, 1985-1993, James Bird

Authorship studies in such disciplines as physics and economics show that with the passage of time there has been an increase in the number of authors per paper, indicating a trend toward more collaboration. In this study, a search was run on the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts database to identify marine mammal science papers published from 1985 to 1993. A total of 1308 papers published in scientific journals was examined. There were weak but statistically significant trends in the increase in the number of authors per paper as well as in the number of multi-authored papers written by authors …

Using Focus Groups To Match User Expectations With Library Constraints [Workshop Report], Elizabeth Parang, Sheryl Williams

Elizabeth Parang

Focus groups can furnish needed user input in a short time frame. The issues to be discussed must be clearly identified and questions formulated. Appropriate participants can then be selected. Care should be exercised in selecting a facilitator, a meeting location, and recording equipment. Sessions transcripts can be readily analyzed using a matrix which can then be utilized to compile a written report summarizing both the overwhelming feeling of group and other points brought out.

Great Expectations: Competency-Based Training For Student Media Center Assistants, Penny Beile Dec 1996

Great Expectations: Competency-Based Training For Student Media Center Assistants, Penny Beile

Penny Beile

According to recent Association of Research Libraries (ARL) statistics, the cost of employing a student assistant is approximately 25% of the hourly wage of a librarian (ARL 1997). From this cost perspective alone, there is a strong incentive for academic libraries to staff with student employees rather than librarians wherever possible. It appears student assistants will continue to be an integral part of many academic library departments. Nowhere else, however, is this more true than in academic media centers. Depending upon the scope of the collection and services offered by the particular media center student assistants perform a variety of …

Discovering Sense Making In Information Behavior: An Ethnography Of Communication In Work Planning Or "Smelly, Like A Day Old Fish", Paul Solomon

Paul Solomon

Studies of information behavior typically focus on information seeking and source selection. This study explore the application of a broader perspective of viewing information behavior in relation to the sense making of individual, group, and organization during three annual iterations of work planning. The study is naturalistic in that it attempts to discover patterns of behavior in light of people performing their own work, in their own manner, and in their own time. Methods are primarily those of an ethnography of communication, where observation of communicative events; interviews; transcripts of meetings, conversations, and documentary traces; and logs were the data …
