For Your Enrichment: Assistance Animals In The Library: How One Academic Library Developed Best Practices, Rebecca M. Marrall

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Effectively addressing concerns about assistance animals in any library setting is often problematic due to a lack of awareness about assistance animals in general, which then leads to uncertainty on how to proceed in these situations. Library personnel, regardless of library type, are often unaware of legal definitions of assistance animals. When compelled to respond to a patron complaint about “a dog in the library,” many library professionals are uncertain about which questions they may legally ask a patron who is accompanied by an animal. This uncertainty then creates concern about how to act in these situations, and thus, many …

Leveraging Library Ecology: Growing Beyond Boundaries To Cultivate A Sustainable Knowledge Community Through Team-Based Librarianship, Jenny K. Oleen, Ellen R. Urton, Meagan J. Duever, Casey D. Hoeve, Livia Olsen, David Vail Mar 2015

Leveraging Library Ecology: Growing Beyond Boundaries To Cultivate A Sustainable Knowledge Community Through Team-Based Librarianship, Jenny K. Oleen, Ellen R. Urton, Meagan J. Duever, Casey D. Hoeve, Livia Olsen, David Vail

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Higher education increasingly challenges libraries to thrive while adapting to fiscal realities, imploring institutions to accomplish more with less, and leverage assets creatively. When competing demands vie for attention, interdisciplinary concepts such as sustainability may be neglected, or simply absent from a library’s mission. A team-based community of librarians can galvanize existing assets wherever they reside within an organization. This approach requires that librarians transcend traditional boundaries to reveal untapped or underutilized expertise. Interdepartmental teams within a library can address topics difficult to assign to one designated specialist, and access the education, interests, or networks possessed by multiple individuals across …

Subject Matrices: An Innovative, Collaborative Approach To Serving The Agricultural Sciences, Jenny K. Oleen, Livia Olsen, Jason Coleman Jan 2015

Subject Matrices: An Innovative, Collaborative Approach To Serving The Agricultural Sciences, Jenny K. Oleen, Livia Olsen, Jason Coleman

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

In 2009, Kansas State University Libraries (K-State Libraries) moved from subject-based departments to user-based departments. From this change, subject matrices, including the Agriculture and Biological Science Matrix, were developed to address subject-related issues. This matrix is comprised of librarians from many K-State Libraries’ departments and is a conduit for sharing information interdepartmentally and developing collaborative opportunities. Libraries wishing to maintain a traditional subject-liaison model can adapt key principles underlying the matrix. Subject liaisons can go beyond siloed perspectives by soliciting advice from individuals outside the library. Another approach is to disturb established structures and introduce selective pressure to inspire innovation.

The Role Of Stories In Library Marketing And Communications, Clarissa J. Mansfield

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

The Role of Stories in Library Marketing and Communications: We in the library profession know that libraries offer a wide variety of services and resources to our communities and patrons, but despite the unique programs we host, the access we provide to print and online resources, special collections, and archival materials, or even research and writing assistance, finding proactive ways of effectively communicating this to our users can be challenging. Likewise, it is not uncommon for libraries to have to compete for financial support and human resources in an era of reduced funding and shrinking or flat base budgets. Combine …

Subject Matrices: An Innovative, Collaborative Approach To Serving The Agricultural Sciences, Jenny K. Oleen

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Our library reorganized, moving from traditional subject-specific departments to Basic Information Services (BIS) and Researcher Services (RS) departments, based around how patrons use information. This model emphasizes collaboration through internal teams called “subject matrices”. Our library’s Agriculture & Biological Sciences Matrix includes individuals from BIS, RS, Archives, and Technical Services as well as individuals with expertise in instructional design, copyright, and data management.

This matrix has emerged as a community interested in agriculture and the sciences by bringing people together from many departments. We have learned from each other through presentations and “field trips” to various locations around campus. The …

Staffing And Workflow Of A Maturing Institutional Repository, Jenny K. Oleen, Debora L. Madsen

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Institutional repositories (IRs) have become established components of many academic libraries. As an IR matures it will face the challenge of how to scale up its operations to increase the amount and types of content archived. These challenges involve staffing, systems, workflows, and promotion. In the past eight years, Kansas State University's IR (K-REx) has grown from a platform for student theses, dissertations, and reports to also include faculty works. The initial workforce of a single faculty member was expanded as a part of a library-wide reorganization, resulting in a cross-departmental team that is better able to accommodate the expansion …

Undergraduate research (UR) programs attract highly motivated students who often continue on to graduate/professional schools but may lack necessary information literacy skills. Collaboration with UR programs provides librarians new opportunities to help students develop these skills and work with specialized collections in the context of a research experience. In this webinar, librarians and UR administrators share their experiences in forging collaborations based on UR and library training resources, explain how information literacy skills programming has been embedded into UR, and demonstrate how this partnership has led to greater visibility of library services, collections and UR among all undergraduates.
