Spotlight On Public Libraries: The Pop-Up Rolling Library, Purl, Meets Patrons Where They Live, Work, And Play, Hollie Stevenson-Parrish

The Southeastern Librarian

How do public libraries remain relevant and top of mind in their communities, all while giving their patrons the resources they need? They take the library to the people, which is just what the Piedmont Regional Library System did in May, 2020. Just as COVID-19 was sweeping the country, this public library system headquartered in Jefferson, Georgia launched PuRL, the (Pop-up Rolling Library). Think bookmobile, but even better.

Written In Light: Creating Access To Photographic Collections, Suellyn Lathrop, Nancy Richey Apr 2015

Written In Light: Creating Access To Photographic Collections, Suellyn Lathrop, Nancy Richey

The Southeastern Librarian

The value in photographs is noted "in our culture because they are inexpensive, easy to acquire, and serve as accurate, detailed records of our environment and activities" (Schmidle, 1996). But, many challenges are presented to the archivist and librarian by the discovered or donated collection of photographs because in their abundance and variety, they can surpass all other forms of information housed in institutions. For a university archives, holdings include photographs culled from manuscript collections, from individual photographers and alumni, but the majority come from in-house production. For the librarian, the provenance of the photographs will be as varied as …

The Embedded Library: Beyond The Course Connection, Sims Kline Apr 2015

The Embedded Library: Beyond The Course Connection, Sims Kline

The Southeastern Librarian

Several hundred articles have been published in the last few years on the role of the “embedded librarian” and the nature of “embedded librarianship” as well as books on the subject, e.g. Embedded Librarianship: What Every Academic Librarian Should Know (Daughtery & Russo, 2013). “The Art and Environment of Embedded Librarianship” (Saunders & Taylor, 2014) is a good example of an article examining the librarian’s role in a specific course. “Embedded librarianship” has been established as a subject heading in Library and Information Science Abstracts.

Stress And Cataloging Paraprofessionals In Academic And Public Libraries In Florida, Edna Mcclellan Apr 2011

Stress And Cataloging Paraprofessionals In Academic And Public Libraries In Florida, Edna Mcclellan

The Southeastern Librarian

Over the years and particularly with the advent of OCLC, more and more tasks once considered the realm of the professional cataloger area being completed by paraprofessionals. This article confines itself to the cataloging paraprofessional, the cataloging record, workload, and training. Who is creating the cataloging record, or, if not responsible for the record in its entirety, who is responsible for parts of it? Does the assuming these higher level tasks, such as creating the call number and subject headings, cause any undue stress for the paraprofessional? What is the stress from workload and pace?

Attitudes Towards Library Patrons With Physical Challenges: A Survey Of Members Of The Public Library Division Of The Alabama Library Association, Jackie Brodsky, Muriel K. Wells

The Southeastern Librarian

By surveying members of the Public Library Division of the Alabama Library Association, this study sought to determine attitudes toward patrons with physical challenges. The continued growth in the population of persons over age 65, coupled with the fact that nearly one in five Americans report some level of physical challenge, suggests the need for libraries to provide resources and services to this growing constituency. The advent of new technologies and resources for libraries to provide access to information by persons with physical challenges, allows more users to fulfill a more participatory role within their information-seeking activities. The application of …

Creating A Culture Of Mentoring @ Your Library, Elizabeth M. Doolittle, John-Bauer Graham, Alyssa Martin, Hal Mendelsohn, Kent Snowden, Amanda Stone Apr 2009

Creating A Culture Of Mentoring @ Your Library, Elizabeth M. Doolittle, John-Bauer Graham, Alyssa Martin, Hal Mendelsohn, Kent Snowden, Amanda Stone

The Southeastern Librarian

The need to find and retain high quality leadership for libraries is one of the top seven issues for academic libraries. With a significant percentage of librarians planning to retire in the next decade, retaining professionals is imperative. Librarians must not only be retained, but mentored and developed for future leadership roles in the academic library community (Hisle, 2002).

Creating a “culture of mentoring” helps the organization, individuals in the organization, and those with whom they interact. This culture provides integrity (accountability) throughout the organization, and opportunities for learning, for feedback and for improvement of performance throughout the organization. Libraries …
