Paulette Rothbauer

This book is about the experience of reading—what reading feels like, how it makes people feel, how people read and under what conditions, what drives people to read, and, conversely, what halts the individual in the pursuit of the pleasures of reading. The authors consider reading in all of its richness as they explore readers’ relationships with diverse textual and digital forms.

This edited volume is divided into three sections: Theory, Practice, and Politics. The first provides insights into ways of seeing, thinking, and conceptualizing the experience of reading. The second features a variety of individual and social practices of …

“Pure Delight And Professional Development”: The Reading Practices And Library Use Of An Active Poetry Community, Carey Toane, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

Abstract:
This paper reports the findings of an online survey designed to explore the reading practices, library habits, and book acquisition of adult members of an active poetry community (n = 32) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Findings show the close relationship between poetry reading and poetry writing and the tight interweaving of poetry throughout the working and personal lives of respondents. Reading and finding out about poetry are also highly social in nature with a clear reliance on the poetry community rather than the public library. Our findings have implications for the roles of reading institutions such as bookstores, …

Public Libraries In The Lives Of Young Readers, Paulette Rothbauer, Virginia A. Walter, Kathleen Weibel

Youth services in public libraries have always been characterized by good intentions and commitment to
patrons’ personal choice: to select, to question, and to know. The public library has changed and grown since
its Progressive Era beginnings, and the leadership for much of this change has come from youth services librarians
in their work on behalf of young library users, whether this involves summer programming or digital
media development. This chapter’s three scholars bring a wealth of public library experience to this endeavor,
as they describe the past, present, and future of public library service to young people in the …

Exploring The Placelessness Of Reading Among Older Teens In A Canadian Rural Municipality, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

Situated in a review of rural, cultural, and youth geographies, this article reports on a qualitative study of the role of reading and libraries in the lives of older rural teenagers. The primary method of data collection was the use of in-depth, flexibly structured interviews with twenty-seven youth between the ages of fifteen and nineteen years, supplemented with data from unobtrusive observation and environmental scanning in a specific geographic locale. Four themes are discussed: the habitual, quotidian reading of teenagers; the shifting visibility of the public library; the Internet and the World Wide Web as a default reading site; and …

Drawing upon data published in a variety of scholarly journals, monographs in education, cultural studies, media studies, and libraries and information studies, as well as their own research findings, these authors shatter some of the popular myths about reading and offer a cogent case for the library's vital role in the life of a reader. By providing a road map to research findings on reading, reader-response, audiences, genres, the value of popular culture, the social nature of reading, and the role of libraries in promoting literacy and reading, this guide offers a clear rationale for making pleasure reading a priority …

Using 35 articles published in JASIST between 1985 and 2005, we present the first level of our analysis of the themes we found in respect to the representation of young people as subjects of information science research. It is our general finding that the developmental approach to childhood remains dominant.

A presentation of my dissertation research in which I examine reading as a taken-for-granted and under-studied aspect of information seeking and information use. Specifically, I look at the role of voluntary reading in the negotiation of alternative sexual identities amongst young women (18-23 years of age) who self-identify as lesbian, queer or bisexual.

Finding And Creating Possibility: Reading In The Lives Of Lesbian, Bisexual And Queer Young Women, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

This study examines the voluntary reading practices of self-identified lesbian, bisexual and queer young women between the ages of 18 and 23 years. The practices associated with voluntary reading including finding, borrowing, buying, reading, sharing and talking about texts, especially those that fall into the genre of lesbian and gay literature, comprise the central theme of this study. Data collection and analysis were guided by principles of qualitative,
interpretivist inquiry. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with seventeen young women in London and Toronto, Ontario. Three main themes related to reading emerged from analysis of interview transcripts. The first of …

The Internet In The Reading Accounts Of Lesbian And Queer Young Women: Failed Searches And Unsanctioned Reading, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

In my dissertation research (Rothbauer 2004a), I explore the role of voluntary reading in the lives of self-identified lesbian or queer young women (18–23 years). The larger context of this inquiry concerns the negotiation of diverse meanings of alternative sexualities constructed by young people through the consumption of a range of self-selected reading materials, including lesbian and gay literature. Data collection and analysis were guided by qualitative principles of interpretive and reflexive research, and data are taken primarily from conversational interviews with 17 young women, conducted between November 2001 and February 2003. One area of significant findings encompasses the uses …
