West Virginia faces geographic obstacles and economic problems in providing quality higher eduction to its residents. Marshall University (MU) and Marshall University Graduate College (MUGC) merged on July 1, 1997 and are integrating their library services including those to rural and distance learners. Beyond traditional document delivery, both institutions are focusing on electronic resources and Web access. MU and MUGC are making significant efforts to enhance the electronic infrastructure and have developed strategies to take advantage of the recent merger by combining services.

Hip High-Tech Purchases Don't Always Work Out As Planned, Monica Brooks

Since technology is so expensive, making the wrong purchasing decisions can have severe financial consequences. The purpose of this article is to describe three technology decisions that failed to achieve their original intent. For each of the three, the author's discuss the expectations of the chief information officer, the vendor's sales pitch, why the product was chosen, what went wrong and why, and the lessons that were learned. The article concludes by suggesting ways to minimize these sorts of costly technology decisions and by describing how students found ways to make the most of technology gone awry.

The purpose of this study is to identify organizational culture types and leadership roles among research and non-research libraries in higher education institutions in the United States and to reveal trends that can assist in enacting needed organizational change. Organizational culture and leadership are two intertwined concepts that are strongly aligned with the human element of any supervisory experience. According to Crosby, they help “nurture effective and humane organizations” (Crosby, 2004).
