Discusses the development of Providence College’s Phillips Memorial Library+Commons Digital Publishing Services (DPS) Department and its evolving collaborative partnership with the faculty editor of Inti: La revista de literatura hispánica, a paper subscription-based, peer-reviewed journal. Beginning with digitization and publication through Providence College’s institutional repository (IR) of the earliest issues, the paper details the evolution of the partnership through support for digital print-on-demand and creation of a companion website for both promoting forthcoming issues and for exploring new forms of “writing” and expression through digital media.

The benefits of conference participation for undergraduates are now well understood, but the same cannot be said for the practical question of how to create and fund such opportunities for students, particularly at smaller liberal arts colleges. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to highlight undergraduates as an emergent student–scholar author group and to encourage institutions to take a future-oriented view, focusing greater attention to and support of undergraduate’s publishing. Design/methodology/approach – Highlighting benefits derived from undergraduate research (UR) experiences and publishing taken from the literature and experienced through local practice (Providence College), presenting pedagogical models for transforming students into independent thinkers (students as scholars) and responding to business and non-profit leader graduate skills requests of higher education, this paper argues for the need to cultivate graduate attributes (requisite 21st century workforce skills, abilities and …
