Torturing Nurses With Data: Building A Successful Quantitative Research Module, Kristi Anne Thompson

This paper discusses two iterations of an effort to create a quantitative research module for a Master's in Nursing research methods course at the University of Windsor. The first version involved a single three-hour class incorporating both lecture and hands-on practice, followed by an assignment to independently locate and analyze a dataset. The second version was both more extensive and more structured, with a three-hour lecture, an assigned reading, a three-hour practice session, and an analysis assignment using a pre-selected data set. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to address the issues associated with electronic resources management (ERM) system implementation in a consortium environment.

Design/methodology/approach - The paper outlines the implementation process along with the problems encountered and their solutions and impacts on the use of the system in the implementation of Verde ERM system at University of Windsor Leddy Library, which implemented the system as one of the early adopters within a consortium. The issues and challenges the library experienced in the project are analyzed and discussed.

Chinese Localisation Of Evergreen: An Open Source Integrated Library System, Qing Zou, Liu Guoying

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate various issues related to Chinese language localisation in Evergreen, an open source integrated library system (ILS).

Design/methodology/approach - A Simplified Chinese version of Evergreen was implemented and tested and various issues such as encoding, indexing, searching, and sorting specifically associated with Simplified Chinese language were investigated.

Findings - The paper finds that Unicode eases a lot of ILS development problems. However, having another language version of an ILS does not simply require the translation from one language to another. Indexing, searching, sorting and other locale related issues should be tackled …

Finding quality microdata on developing countries can seem problematic as their national infrastructures may not support large-scale surveys. In fact a variety of organizations are collecting and distributing data, though the types of data and reasons for collection often differ from those in the most developed countries. Much of the data is collected by groups involved in, or interested in researching, the field of international development. This paper provides an introduction to the different groups involved with collecting data on developing countries and to the data they collect, including population, health and welfare surveys, program assessments, finance, and opinion data.
