Featuring 100,000 full text items supplied by Nebraska faculty, staff and students, the Digital Commons surpassed the 50-million download mark on Sept. 14. In a survey of other leading online repositories managed by other universities, the total downloads from Digital Commons ranks as the top site in the nation. The milestone was reached through the stewardship of …

Office Of Scholarly Communications Annual Report, Fy 2012, Paul Royster, Sue Ann Gardner

Digital Commons / Institutional Repository Information

The UNL Libraries’ Office of Scholarly Communications continues to be among the most active and innovative in the USA. Its DigitalCommons repository is the nation’s second-largest, but perhaps its most impressive feature is the degree of faculty acceptance and participation. Other libraries are challenged to get faculty to contribute to their repositories; we are challenged to keep up with the incoming volume and ongoing demand for services. Our library publishing efforts are also a model for others, and we are a leader in the development of electronic publishing of open-access academic materials.

Report includes list of accomplishments, analysis of trends, …

Word 2010 Fonts Embedding Issues Resolved, Paul Royster,

Digital Commons / Institutional Repository Information

Earlier this week I was “upgraded” from MS Office 2007 to MS Office 2010. In addition to the annoyance of hours spent reconstructing my former settings and toolbars for Word, I also discovered another issue: Word files saved as PDF refused to embed some fonts, specifically those deriving from Excel or other charts and graphs inserted into Word documents.

Previously, Word 2007 had interoperated with an Adobe Acrobat plug-in to properly convert such files and embed all fonts according to Acrobat’s preference settings. But for Word 2010, there is no working Acrobat plug-in, and Microsoft has proudly included their own …

The Art Of Scanning, Paul Royster Jan 2011

The Art Of Scanning, Paul Royster

Digital Commons / Institutional Repository Information

Yes, it is presumptuous to call scanning an “art,” when it is really more of a craft, but “The Craft of Scanning” doesn’t sound as sexy, so we will consider it for the time being as one of the fine arts, like music, or painting, or dance. This short treatise derives from work done in the process of scanning published and original materials to create PDF files for online publication or deposit in our institutional repository. This approach assumes you have a scanner and software to drive it, and also three software programs from Adobe (sold together as their Creative …

This month’s most popular article, “RODENTS AS A FOOD SOURCE,” (from the Proceedings of the Fourteenth Vertebrate Pest Conference 1990) was referenced by food blogger Jesse Sharrad at http://corduroyorange.com/?p=273 and experienced 50 to 100 hits daily for several weeks afterwards. Interesting article, but lately I’ve been eyeing the campus squirrels and thinking “Brunswick stew”.
