Textual Appropriation In Engineering Master's Theses: A Preliminary Study, Edward J. Eckel

In the thesis literature review, an engineering graduate student is expected to place original research in the context of previous work by other researchers. However, for some students, particularly those for whom English is a second language, the literature review may be a mixture of original writing and verbatim source text appropriated without quotations. Such problematic use of source material leaves students vulnerable to an accusation of plagiarism, which carries severe consequences. The OCLC CONTENTdm Metadata Working Group was formed in response to research demonstrating the need for guidelines and best practices for creating quality Dublin Core metadata, which is useful to the primary user community and “shareable” outside of the local context. The CONTENTdm Metadata Working Group has worked since August 2009 in a test environment to develop best practices for creating Dublin Core metadata in CONTENTdm and mapping to MARC to share in WorldCat via the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway, a self-service OAI harvesting tool. Individuals who wish to develop digital scholarly works and libraries that wish to provide access to their precious and fragile holdings have an interest in digitizing premodern manuscripts. These handmade objects are often beautiful and each one is unique. The features of zooming and light alteration available through digital photography and manipulation are assets to medieval scholars, because these methods can reveal more information for teaching and research. The responsibilities of the Soviet era book chambers in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have almost all been incorporated into the national libraries of the three Baltic States, since they regained independence in 1991. This article will summarize the work with legal deposit copies, current and retrospective national bibliographies, indexes, publishing statistics, ISSN, ISBN and ISMN agencies, and online databases in each country. All three Baltic States have made tremendous progress in making their materials available to researchers worldwide, though full text access is still very limited.

College students of the Millennial generation present a new challenge to educators -- Millennials’ needs and expectations are different from preceding generations. They have a different relationship with technology which translates into different learning styles, and most importantly, different expectations of when, where, and how to learn.

By the late 1990s, online tutorials became popular tools to teach information literacy skills. Western Michigan University (WMU) Libraries was an early adopter, creating the awardwinning Searchpath tutorial in 1999.
