It Works All The Time ... Except For When It Doesn’T: Analyzing Error Reports From A Library Link Resolver, John Hubbard

Data from 22 months of a library discovery layer's "Report a Problem" link traffic shows that submissions (n=884) were attributable to user errors (43%); defective vendor systems (40%); and problems with local settings (17%). Implications and strategies are discussed.

This project examines how White curators at four museums in Wisconsin portray Native American women based on a number of institutional and individual curatorial choices. Intersectional Theory is used to explore how museums and museum professionals navigate questions of representation of a traditionally marginalized group. It places specific emphasis on the relationship between Community Curation and Intersectional Theory and explores whether or not the involvement of Native groups noticeably impacts representation of Native American women.

The purpose of this study was to understand how Wisconsin archives are using Facebook (Wisconson archives Facebook community, WAFC). Few archive studies use quantitative measurements to draw conclusions from social media application use. Quantitative data is needed in order to identify the various ways that social media is being used in an archive. Without the data behind the assumptions, it is impossible to improve service and outreach to the archive users. Artificial intelligence (AI) that is based upon semantic search has become one of the dominant means for accessing information in recent years. This is particularly the case in mobile contexts, as search based AI are embedded in each of the major mobile operating systems. Issues with unemployment, underemployment, and inadequate preparation have raised concerns about what colleges are doing to ready students for post-graduate careers, but little discussion exists regarding students’ roles in the process. Students play active roles in the vocational anticipatory socialization process, so this study examines the factors that influence college students to seek career information from two sources: the Internet and campus career centers. The Phoenicians first settled the Maltese islands sometime in the early to late seventh century B.C., and their material culture left a lasting influence on the island for nearly a millennium. Are Limits More Important Than Results? Collecting Usability Data For A Facets-On-The-Right Library Discovery Layer Design, John Hubbard

Rapid A/B-like usability testing was employed in an effort to determine the optimal efficacy of and end user satisfaction with post-search delimiters (facets) being placed on the right vs. left side of the results screen in a resource discovery layer. Based on a survey of library visitors (n=17), results suggest a facets-on-the-left design draws more attention to limits (p=.20) and is preferred by patrons (p=.07). Best practices for customization are also discussed.

Data curation exists within a larger framework of laws and policies covering topics like copyright and data retention. These obligations must be considered in order to properly care for data as it is being created and preserved. While laws may transition slowly, the policies applying to research data by funding bodies, institutions, and journals have seen significant change since the turn of the century. These policies have directly impacted the practices of researchers and prompted the creation of data curation services by many libraries in partnership with their larger institutions.
