The two of us have been writing partners for many years. It began with our support for the Equal Rights Amendment in solidarity with the Illinois Women Library Workers in the early 1980s. We marched at the state capitol and we brought original copies of Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party's Equal Rights to hunger strikers; we sat in on protests; we developed research papers with data to use in political debate and more recently, we are studying the innate (integrated, essential, core) values of librarianship and their connection to human rights (McCook and Phenix 2007; Phenix and McCook …

Immigration was the focus of much discussion in the summer of 2007.The issues are complex and U.S. libraries as communities have taken different stances on serving undocumented people. With the “Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Reform Act” of 2007 having failed to pass the Senate, and the STRIVE ACT (“Security Through Regularized Immigration and a Vibrant Economy” – H.R. 1645) stalled in the House, librarians must look ahead to safeguard human rights for immigrants who live and work among us as first priority.

The Effects Of Librarians' Behavioral Performance On User Satisfaction In Chat Reference Services, Nahyun Kwon, Vicki Gregory

The purpose of this study was to determine the effective behaviors of reference librarians during the chat reference interview, with particular emphasis given to whether the service users would feel more satisfied when librarians adopt the behaviors recommended in the revised “RUSA Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Services Providers.” The data analyzed for this study consisted of 422 chat reference transaction transcripts and corresponding user surveys obtained from a public library system that participated in a nationwide chat reference consortium.
