The Catholic Portal, a gateway to rare and unique Catholic material, was created by the Catholic Research Resources Alliance (CRRA) in concert with its membership. This essay provides a brief overview of the Catholic Portal, its history, and its value as a research tool. It also introduces the following essays that describe specific contributed collections and explores the potential for the discovery of related resources within the portal.

The Cycle Of User-Responsive Collection Development In Digital Libraries, Genevieve Podleski, Jane Davis

Traditional collection development strategies may not be sufficient to effectively expand the use of a digital library or repository. Librarians working on FRASER, a digital library of economic history that is both a subject and institutional repository, have developed a cyclical strategy of user-responsive collection development. Collections developed in response to stakeholder needs include materials on historic responses to mortgage defaults during the Great Depression, and on the causes of historic panics and depressions, which grew out of the research priorities of policymakers and economists during the financial crisis of 2007. Using the Claremont Colleges Library as a case study, this interactive, workshop-style presentation offers ideas and suggestions about how to build capacity within the library and the broader campus community to support and advance Digital Humanities (DH) projects, as well as digital scholarship more broadly. Through workshops, spring symposia, summer institutes, and introductory short courses for faculty, grad students, and librarians, the Claremont Colleges Library has become an integral part of the DH community and digital skilling process at the colleges.
