Over the past year, the University of Rhode Island (URI) has taken some steps towards shifting the default to Open Access for both faculty scholarship and student work. First and foremost, in March 2013, the URI Faculty Senate passed a Harvard-style Open Access mandate. And in February 2013, the Library and the Graduate School began making electronic dissertations and theses openly available through URI’s institutional repository. In this presentation, we will define Open Access policies and discuss why they are important. We will give an overview of our experiences with Open Access advocacy, implementation of policies, and next steps.

The main document posted here is a PDF of a spreadsheet containing data for the Academic Libraries section of the annual IPEDS survey, as well as the methodology for collecting that data. The document contains FY2014 data as submitted by the University of Rhode Island Libraries to the Office of Institutional Research in FY15.

Supplemental files consist of the spreadsheet in Excel format and a PDF printout of the blank form and survey instructions from the IPEDS website.

Comparison of the University of Rhode Island Libraries with peer institutions (as defined by the University's Office of Institutional Research). Data used are from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Statistical Survey from the years 2009-2013. Metrics compared are: total library expenditures, total library materials expenditures, ongoing resource purchases, one-time resource purchases, salaries & wages professional staff, salaries & wages support staff, professional staff (fte), support staff (fte), student headcount, total library expenditures per student, and total library materials expenditures per student.
