Awareness of OER is essential to understanding and implementing open and equitable pedagogical practices. However, what if a campus requires more education about the “what” and “why” of OER to then spark discussions about open pedagogy? And how does an institution build a campus culture of open education when stakeholders have different degrees of investment in its implementation? OER advocacy efforts may differ significantly depending on an individual’s position within the academic hierarchy and their job responsibilities.

The materials include readings, multimedia resources, discussion questions, and practical assignments. The curriculum emphasizes adaptability, catering to diverse audiences and educational settings. The curriculum addresses real-world challenges faced by librarians, explores the nuances of open licenses, and guides students through hands-on activities, fostering a deeper understanding of copyright issues in the digital age.

Informal Field-Based Learning In Librarianship: A Case Study Applying The Cam-Os Framework To Library Guide Construction, Nicole R. Webber

Activities such as library guide creation and maintenance can take a large amount of our time without supplying evidence that the time spent is effective or worthwhile. Usage statistics and feedback are one avenue for gauging the impact of a guide, but we overlook another benefit if we focus solely on the user. By applying Tannenbaum and Wolfson’s (2022) CAM-OS framework, we can bring greater intention to tasks that foster informal learning opportunities and harness them to advance librarians’ competencies. A case study of overhauling a library guide on copyright is used to demonstrate and apply the framework.

Open Educational Resources (Oer) Efficacy And Experiences: A Mixed Methods Study, Jennifer Mayer

This study compared course passing and completion rates of undergraduate students to determine if there was any relationship between use of open educational resources (OER) and these two outcomes. Students who took OER courses and faculty who taught with OER shared their perceptions of the impact of such resources on learning outcomes and teaching methods.
The quantitative analysis revealed that using OER had a positive impact on course passing rates (7 percent increase) and completion rates (10 percent increase) for all students. The traditional subject specialist model allowed liaison librarians at our mid-sized, public, doctoral/professional university to develop strong relationships with disciplinary faculty. But changing priorities at the university level and reductions in library budget and staffing created new challenges, resulting in liaisons shouldering too many responsibilities and facing unsustainable workloads. Learning to “do less with less” required a significant evolution in how we approached our core work as academic librarians. How could our library re-envision a previously successful liaison model when the librarians agreed that a change was needed, but didn’t agree what it should look like?

The presenter developed and distributed two campus survey questionnaires in fall 2018, and redistributed them in fall 2021, to see what, if anything, had changed in responses. One survey focused on textbook and course materials costs and impacts on students. The other survey focused on perceptions and awareness of open educational resources (OER) by faculty members. The survey instruments were deployed both years via the Provost's Office to students and faculty. In 2008, three members of the faculty at the University of Northern Colorado Libraries created a document with the purpose of providing overarching mentoring guidance for their peers. In 2019, a small group of faculty librarians, with input from their colleagues, completely revised the document to create a community-sourced program reflecting the evolution in mentoring philosophies. Although extensive research has looked at first-generation college students’ experiences, very little has examined the role of the library. This article reports the results of an asset-based exploratory study understanding the experiences of first-generation college students at three universities. Key findings of this study focus on themes of self-advocacy, sense of belonging, library customization, and integration of the library with the larger campus. This article discusses these key themes in the context of improving library services and spaces, ultimately providing more inclusive resources for all student groups. Implications and recommendations for professional practice are discussed.

How libraries affect student success has become an increasingly important question to many academic librarians. To investigate this phenomenon, we explored student success via two approaches in this multimethod study: 1) through individual student interviews to capture the student voice; and 2) through hierarchical linear and logistic modeling of institutional data to capture the institutional perspective. Through the qualitative component, students articulated how they define success and how the library contributes to their success, especially in terms of providing a sense of belonging and facilitating the work of a community of scholars. Cultures across the globe are increasingly visual—whether this be due to the popularity of video streaming, advances in the graphic arts, or the rise of accessible software, apps, and other technologies. In fact, while globalization endures as a prominent force, it seems that the rather universal languages of images and numbers do as well. Visualizations—in particular data visualizations—are valued for their efficiency in communicating messages and their efficacy in spurring emotion and instigating action. This gives such images great power.

The writer Connie Willis lives in Greeley, Colorado, home to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). She is an alumna of UNC and has chosen to deposit her papers in its archives. A pre-eminent science fiction author, her clock- and calendar-defying tales of time travel have transported many fans and won numerous awards. The objective of this research is to assess student learning in a library one-shot for Nursing students who are beginning to navigate the scholarly research system and to identify and procure primary and secondary research studies to support a clinical change.
Methods
NURS 380 is the research and evidence-based practice course for second-year nursing students taken in concert with clinical experiences. Research data management is a prominent and evolving consideration for the academic community, especially in scientific disciplines. This research study surveyed 131 graduate students and 79 faculty members in the sciences at two public doctoral universities to determine the importance, knowledge, and interest levels around research data management training and education. The authors adapted 12 competencies for measurement in the study. Graduate students and faculty ranked the following areas most important among the 12 competencies: ethics and attribution, data visualization, and quality assurance. Library instruction varies in format but often manifests in the librarian teaching a single, isolated class session—what librarians refer to as a “one-shot.” Many challenges accompany this traditional format, including time-constraints, disengaged audiences, and little understanding on the part of the student as to how the library instruction integrates with course content. Flipped Learning methods can help counter these challenges even when the overall course is not based on a flipped model. Discover strategies to successfully manage the implementation of your library’s strategic plan. This session will focus on five activities to successfully implement a strategic plan. These activities make the plan a living document with real connection to the day-to-day work of the entire library. The activities include breaking goals into concrete actions, creating a tracking spreadsheet, assigning leads from library management to each strategic plan objective, conducting quarterly strategic plan update meetings with the library management group, and providing regular communication with the library managers and the entire library staff.
