Finding The Middle Ground In Collection Development: How Academic Law Librarians Can Shape Their Collections In Response To The Call For More Practice-Oriented Legal Education, Leslie A. Street, Amanda M. Runyon Sep 2019

Finding The Middle Ground In Collection Development: How Academic Law Librarians Can Shape Their Collections In Response To The Call For More Practice-Oriented Legal Education, Leslie A. Street, Amanda M. Runyon

Leslie A. Street

To examine how academic law libraries can respond to the call for more practice-oriented legal education, the authors compared trends in collection management decisions regarding secondary sources at academic and law firm libraries. The results of their survey are followed by recommendations about how academic and firm librarians can work together to best provide law students with materials they will need in practice.

All Of The Responsibility, None Of The Authority, Rice Majors, Erika Johnson

Rice Majors

This will be an interactive session for people who manage an acquisitions budget but don't manage the corresponding personnel who select materials (e.g. subject librarians). How do you encourage appropriate collection development decisions? How do you help revision collection development for long-time employees, or get others to change their workflows to be more efficient? How do you encourage subject librarians to make data-driven decisions? Attendees will work in groups and participate in role playing scenarios to develop strategies for working with colleagues without having explicit authority over those colleagues' work.

Saying Sayonara To The Stl: Strategy, Scale And Systematic Abandonment In The Ebook Marketplace, Doug Way Nov 2015

Saying Sayonara To The Stl: Strategy, Scale And Systematic Abandonment In The Ebook Marketplace, Doug Way

Doug Way

In 2014 the University of Wisconsin-Madison initiated a review of its ebook collection development program. This project led to the development of a concise ebook strategy that was designed to guide decision-making and practices surrounding the acquisition of ebooks. It also led to the end of the Libraries’ short-term loan (STL)-based demand driven acquisitions (DDA) program. This ebook acquisition program, which had been in place for nearly four years, was heavily used, well managed, consistently on budget and, in many ways, working precisely as expected, yet the decision to eliminate this program was fairly straightforward. This session will explore the …

Selection Connection: Creating An Internal Web Page For Collection Development, Julie Rabine, Linda A. Brown Mar 2015

Selection Connection: Creating An Internal Web Page For Collection Development, Julie Rabine, Linda A. Brown

Linda A Brown

Collection development librarians often use Web resources as they select materials, but only a few libraries have built a working Web page for this purpose. The authors suggest that a collection development Web page is a valuable asset to an academic library. The Web page can be used to communicate with university faculty and others outside the library, and can provide a single source for links to Web tools used by collection development librarians. The authors discuss sources of Web-based bibliographer’s tools and suggest useful types of information to include.

How To Cut A Third Of Your Journal Subscriptions (And Keep Faculty Happy), Janelle L. Wertzberger, Kathleen D'Angelo Jan 2014

How To Cut A Third Of Your Journal Subscriptions (And Keep Faculty Happy), Janelle L. Wertzberger, Kathleen D'Angelo

Janelle Wertzberger

When faced with a 0% budget increase for fiscal year 2010, librarians at Gettysburg College designed a comprehensive review of journal subscriptions. Library staff began by gathering data about format(s), price, publisher, and more. Then subject librarians consulted with academic departments and asked faculty to review titles for relevance to current research and curriculum. 100% of departments cooperated with the review with a mixture of enthusiasm and concern; in the end, most offered to cancel about a third of their journal titles. By trimming multiple format subscriptions, relying on aggregator databases for full text content, cancelling titles that no longer …

The Americans With Disabilities Act Compliance And Library Acquisitions, Angela Dresselhaus May 2013

The Americans With Disabilities Act Compliance And Library Acquisitions, Angela Dresselhaus

Angela Dresselhaus

The move from print to electronic materials was the catalyst for many changes in the library community. Libraries have reorganized staff to accommodate electronic workflows, have grappled with digital preservation and have considered the changing roles of libraries in digital scholarship. Vendors have developed electronic resource management systems, link resolvers, discovery layers, and other tools to help libraries manage the transition from print to electronic collections. This talk will address one of the remaining issues of the print to electronic transition; accessibility for patrons with differing abilities. ADA compliance issues are well addressed in the print realm, but the transition …

Speakers: Doug Way, Grand Valley State University; Julie Garrison, Grand Valley State University; Rick Lugg, Sustainable Collection Services. In 2013, Grand Valley State University will open a new library building. At that time materials in the library's existing off-site storage facility will be moved into the new library's automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS), reintegrating them with the main collection. These materials had originally been moved into storage in 2003 because of their low use and since that time, only about 1% of the collection has circulated. Knowing …

The Implementation Of A Patron-Driven Acquisitions Program At An Academic Library, Doug Way May 2011

The Implementation Of A Patron-Driven Acquisitions Program At An Academic Library, Doug Way

Doug Way

Over the past several years there has been a growing interest among academic libraries in patron-driven acquisitions (PDA). As part of a broader shift in its collection development philosophy an academic library decided to implement a large-scale PDA program, and in the fall of 2009 added to its catalog 50,000 MARC records for books it did not own. This session will examine the first year of this project. The rationale behind that decision, the financial and collection impact on the university, lessons learned, and the state of PDA at this university today and in the future will all be discussed.

Good Enough: The New Face Of Reference, Doug Way, Colleen Lyon Dec 2010

Good Enough: The New Face Of Reference, Doug Way, Colleen Lyon

Doug Way

College students today flock to Wikipedia in droves, while at the same time academic libraries continue to pour time and money into print reference collections that are rarely used and take huge amounts of our libraries’ limited space. While libraries have responded to space and access concerns by turning to electronic books, title-by-title selection is a time-consuming affair for a collection that sees low use. In this paper we examine the factors that have led to the point where libraries need to reexamine how they collect and provide access to reference sources. Through a content analysis of reference transcripts and …

Web-scale discovery is now in use by academic libraries and evidence shows it’s moving them forward, improving service and elevating their profile. Spend an hour hearing for …

The Impact Of Web-Scale Discovery On The Use Of A Library Collection, Doug Way Dec 2009

The Impact Of Web-Scale Discovery On The Use Of A Library Collection, Doug Way

Doug Way

Grand Valley State University Libraries implemented Serials Solutions’ web-scale discovery tool, Summon, during the fall of 2009. This case study explores whether Summon had an impact on the use of the library’s resources during its first semester of implementation. An examination of usage statistics showed a dramatic decrease in the use of traditional abstracting and indexing databases and an equally dramatic increase in the use of full text resources from full text database and online journal collections. The author concludes that the increase in full text use is linked to the implementation of a web-scale discovery tool.
