Erm Maintenance: Mapping, Maximizing And Marketing Multiple User Access Methods, Susan A. Massey Aug 2014

Erm Maintenance: Mapping, Maximizing And Marketing Multiple User Access Methods, Susan A. Massey

Susan A. Massey

The proliferation of discovery layers to access library materials poses challenges for electronic resource record loading, maintenance, display, and marketing of multiple user portals. Centralized discovery systems promise to reduce data silos but may complicate electronic resource management activities and mask the importance of the library as a data provider. Electronic resource maintenance must include cross-departmental cooperation for tracking statistics, making purchased titles available to the user, updating subscription changes, verifying metadata display and access in multiple user interfaces, storing metadata files for potential future system migrations, deduplication of processes, and crosswalks between discovery layers. This presentation uses the University …

Opportunities Beyond Electronic Resource Management: An Extension Of The Core Competencies For Electronic Resources Librarians To Digital Scholarship And Scholarly Communications, Angela Dresselhaus

Angela Dresselhaus

This presentation will provide an overview of current topics in digital scholarship and scholarly communications and draw connections between these new areas and the traditional skill sets of acquisitions and electronic resources employees. Commonalities between the skills outlined in the Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians and those needed for success in digital scholarship and scholarly communications will form the basis of the presenter's recommendations for staff involvement in digital scholarship and scholarly communications. #11;#11;An inventory of skills and talents among acquisitions staff will provide insight into the best ways to leverage existing human resources for the expansion of acquisitions …

Why Can't Students Get The Sources They Need? Results From A Real Availability Study, Sanjeet Mann May 2014

Why Can't Students Get The Sources They Need? Results From A Real Availability Study, Sanjeet Mann

Sanjeet Mann

This is the online, archived version of a presentation I gave at the 29th Annual NASIG Conference in Fort Worth, TX on May 2, 2014. Results have been corrected to reflect an updated understanding of availability. Availability studies estimate the proportion of items in a collection that library users can access. This traditional research method can help librarians find and fix the most significant access problems with electronic resources, and connect patrons with information through better collection development and acquisitions decisions. To date, all electronic resource availability studies have been "simulated" studies, in which a librarian tests access to a …

Collaborative Marketing For Electronic Resources: A Project Report And Discussion Of Implications, Marie Kennedy Apr 2014

Collaborative Marketing For Electronic Resources: A Project Report And Discussion Of Implications, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

This article reports on the design and findings of a project concerning the feasibility of a collaborative model to benchmark the marketing of electronic resources in institutions of higher education. This inter-national project gathered 100 libraries to move in lockstep through the process of a typical marketing cycle that included running a brief marketing campaign and reporting findings to each other. The findings show good reasons and strong support for this kind of model.

The Biggest Winner: Using Statistics To Assess The Effectiveness Of An E-Resources Promotional Campaign, Amy Fry Apr 2014

The Biggest Winner: Using Statistics To Assess The Effectiveness Of An E-Resources Promotional Campaign, Amy Fry

Amy Fry

In the fall of 2011, librarians at Bowling Green State University were given the opportunity to compete for a $100 Amazon.com gift card by promoting an underused database. Usage statistics were tracked throughout the semester and compared to those for the same time period from the previous year. Eight of the twelve databases promoted rose in use. This article discusses the project methodology and uses its outcomes to assess the effectiveness of a range of marketing techniques for electronic resources, present hypotheses to account for some declines in usage, and demonstrate the value of distributed, personalized promotion for library resources.

Usability Testing For E-Resource Discovery: How Students Find & Choose E-Resources Using Library Websites, Amy Fry, Linda Rich Apr 2014

Usability Testing For E-Resource Discovery: How Students Find & Choose E-Resources Using Library Websites, Amy Fry, Linda Rich

Amy Fry

In early 2010, library staff at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Ohio designed and conducted a usability study of key parts of the library website, focusing on the web pages generated by the library’s electronic resources management system (ERM) that list and describe the library’s databases. The goal was to discover how users find and choose e-resources and identify ways the library could improve access to e-resources through its web site. This article outlines the usability study conducted at BGSU, presents its conclusions about how students at BGSU find and choose databases, contextualizes these findings with other current research …

This is the online, archived version of a presentation given at SCELC Research Day, March 4, 2014, at Loyola Marymount University. Data have been updated to correct errors with initially reported availability rates. Availability studies, a systems analysis research method long used to improve access to print resources, have recently been applied to study the causes of electronic resource errors. However, to date no researchers have quantified the effectiveness of this method as a troubleshooting tool. This study compares the results of Mann's 2012 electronic resource availability study at the University of Redlands with a follow up study conducted one …
