This is the online, archived version of a presentation I gave at the 29th Annual NASIG Conference in Fort Worth, TX on May 2, 2014. Results have been corrected to reflect an updated understanding of availability. Availability studies estimate the proportion of items in a collection that library users can access. This traditional research method can help librarians find and fix the most significant access problems with electronic resources, and connect patrons with information through better collection development and acquisitions decisions. How Much Do Availability Studies Increase Full Text Success?, Sanjeet Mann

This is the online, archived version of a presentation given at SCELC Research Day, March 4, 2014, at Loyola Marymount University. Data have been updated to correct errors with initially reported availability rates. Availability studies, a systems analysis research method long used to improve access to print resources, have recently been applied to study the causes of electronic resource errors. However, to date no researchers have quantified the effectiveness of this method as a troubleshooting tool.
