JeSLIB is an open access, peer-reviewed journal published by the Lamar Soutter Library at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The library publishes JeSLIB through its eScholarship@UMMS repository on the bepress Digital Commons platform.

One of the “purposeful pathways” in the UMass Medical School Lamar Soutter Library’s 2016-2020 strategic plan is to “responsibly preserve institutional investments in purchased and unique content” [1]. Upon completion of the strategic plan, the library began to investigate digital preservation services for its institutional repository on the Digital Commons platform, eScholarship@UMMS. Although content on bepress platforms is protected by a robust infrastructure that includes multiple backups and cloud storage with Amazon Glacier, the library was interested in an additional level of preservation and control, at a minimal cost. Purpose: This poster describes an evaluation of the effectiveness of elective-based, for-credit research data management instruction at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Population/Resources: Flexible Clinical Experiences (FCEs) are short (one-week), student-driven or pre-designed for-credit courses available to third-year medical students at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. FCE 3017: Research Data Management Fundamentals is a course offered by the library that provides an overview of the basic principles and best practices for data management, with a focus on data lifecycle planning, security and ethics, organization and documentation, and data sharing. Mind The Gap: Curating Digital Commons Metadata For Share, Lisa Palmer, Emily Stenberg, Wendy C. Robertson, Joanne Paterson

The goal of the SHARE initiative, a partnership between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Center for Open Science (COS), is to build a “free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle.” As of October 12, 2016, 129 repositories and publishers have made metadata available to SHARE for harvesting, and the aggregated data set is available for searching. Many metadata providers are institutional repositories utilizing the bepress Digital Commons platform whose metadata is harvested through the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) protocol for repository interoperability.

eScholarship@UMMS is the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s open access digital archive of research and scholarship, managed by the Lamar Soutter Library. The Library began collaborating with the UMass Center for Clinical and Translational Science (UMCCTS) in 2011. eScholarship@UMMS facilitates knowledge and resource sharing of the UMCCTS by collecting and organizing its research products, including Research Retreat posters and presentations, Community Engagement Symposia products, the UMCCTS Newsletter, the UMCCTS Seminar Series, and publications that are the result of UMCCTS-supported research. eScholarship@UMMS provides long-term stable URLs for access to content, which are highly discoverable in Google and other search engines, maximizing …
