Building And Designing Bridges - Enabling Bilingual Academic Learning Experiences, Eileen Bosch, Valeria Molteni

Attendees will have an opportunity to learn and discuss with two librarians from California State University System about the challenges and issues experienced in implementing bilingual services in reference and instructional sessions to bilingual speaking students on their campuses. In addition, attendees will be able to learn about a strong partnership developed between both librarians as well as empowering a curriculum relationship with faculty in Foreign and Romance Languages Departments. Presenters will also address how to create an ambiance of support to first generation students who often experience a lack of confidence necessary to be academically successful.

Standardised Library Instruction Assessment: An Institution-Specific Approach, Shannon M. Staley, Nicole A. Branch, Tom L. Hewitt

Introduction
We explore the use of a psychometric model for locally-relevant, information literacy assessment, using an online tool for standardised assessment of student learning during discipline-based library instruction sessions.

Method
A quantitative approach to data collection and analysis was used, employing standardised multiple-choice survey questions followed by individual, cognitive interviews with undergraduate students. The assessment tool was administered to five general education psychology classes during library instruction sessions.

Analysis
Descriptive statistics were generated by the assessment tool. Results. The assessment tool proved a feasible means of measuring student learning. While student scores improved on every survey question, there was uneven …

Situated Practices Of Information Use And Representation: An Ethnographic Study Of A Web Design Project For Boys, Kristen Rebmann

This article explores the production practices employed by children building personal webpages in a semi-structured afterschool program: the Fifth Dimension (5D). Following a critical Multiliteracies (CritMLs) approach to learning design, this ethnographic study introduced web-building practices to the children of the 5D and followed their production of personal webpages over a 9 month period. By structuring the intervention this way, it was possible to simultaneously observe the development of both the webpage as artifact as well as the child-participant. Along these lines, the study describes the unique and particular social contexts from which personal webpages emerge and develop over time. …

Libraries have opportunities to enhance traditional library services with iPhones. Searching the iTunes store for relevant apps adaptable or targeted for library use is cumbersome. In the past, librarians have highlighted their resources by developing significant annotated bibliographies and subject guides for their users. The presenters have begun using the program, LibGuides, to produce an appography (annotated subject driven bibliography) that guides users to helpful apps from the iTunes store. We anticipate appographies will be the bibliographies of the 21st century.

Now that competencies for information literacy are widely communicated in higher education, including in Art and Design, assessing student learning of the standards is the next step in fully incorporating information literacy in the discipline. A recent investigation at San Jose State University of students’ ability to analyze citations illustrates that students need practice in identifying types of sources, and that this practice can be effectively delivered through brief active learning activities.

Spontaneous Group Decision Making In Distributed Collaborative Learning: Toward A New Research Direction., Geoffrey Liu

This paper attempts to identify and establish spontaneous group decision making in collaborative learning as a new research direction, with particular attention to collaborative learning in distributed online environments. After a brief introduction, related concepts and theories are examined for differentiation of interpretation. The concept of “spontaneous group decision making” is established in the context of collaborative learning. Literature review is conducted to glean anecdotal observations from past research to identify potentially influential factors, and a diagram framework is proposed to charter the territory. Farmers' Search For Information During The Uk Foot-And-Mouth Disease Crisis- What Can We Learn?, Christine Hagar

This paper reports on the findings of a study which explored the multiple information needs that faced the Cumbrian farming community in the north-west of England during the 2001 UK foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Findings highlighted the importance of: changes in information needs at different stages of the crisis, context in which information seeking took place, overlap of information and emotional needs, formal and informal channels of information seeking during the crisis, farmers as information providers as well as information seekers, sense-making approach to information seeking during the crisis, trusted information sources need for a mix of ICTs during the crisis, …

Clicking With Your Audience: Evaluating The Use Of Personal Response Systems In Library Instruction, Emily Chan, Lorrie Knight

University of the Pacific librarians used personal response systems (PRS) or clickers in first- year mandatory library instructional sessions to assess their effects on student engagement and retention of learning outcomes. Students who utilized clickers during their library sessions reported greater enjoyment and encouragement to participate (n=291). Students in the sessions not utilizing the clickers achieved better learning outcomes than their counterparts who utilized clickers (n=326). The implications of these results are discussed, specifically within the context of pedagogy and tailoring instruction to the Millennial generation.

Mining The Knowledge Base: Wiki Technology And Constructivist Learning And In A Reference Services Training Program, Emily Chan, Marina Torres

In Fall 2009, University of the Pacific's Health Sciences Branch (HSB) Library initiated a reference training program to develop competencies and skills in order to promote a uniform level of reference expertise among its paraprofessional staff. Like many other branch libraries, HSB serves specialized user populations with minimal staffing. At the time of the training, the Sciences Librarian was the only provider of reference services and her presence at HSB varied, based upon her responsibilities to the Main Library, its Reference Desk and other departmental, school, and university-wide committees.

Training Paraprofessionals Via A Wiki Format To Deliver Reference Services, Emily Chan, Marina Torres

To maximize staff presence and reference capabilities at HSB, reference training was implemented for the branch's two paraprofessional employees. A wiki platform was selected to collocate different resources and formats in a simple location. The collaborative functions of the wiki complemented the branch's team-oriented environment. Each staff member selected materials of interest and augmented the wiki conversation with their previous experiences.

In Fall 2009, University of the Pacific's (Stockton, CA) Health Sciences Branch (HSB) Library initiated a reference training program to develop staff competencies and skills in order to promote a uniform level of reference expertise. Training was delivered in a wiki format, informed by constructivist principles. Constructivism views learning as a dynamic process-- learners actively construct knowledge, which is built upon earlier experiences.
