Data Information Literacy Case Study Directory

Librarians at Purdue University had the opportunity to develop a semester long data information literacy program to ten students in the College of Agriculture. The program was run as a pilot to test out ideas and approaches in teaching data literacy competencies to students. Topics included high level subjects such as data lifecycles, data management planning, metadata and sharing data, along with practical issues such as file naming conventions, developing a metadata record for a data set and depositing data into a repository. Materials in this case study include weekly lesson plans, slide decks, assignments, an application and other documents …

Preservation Policies Of The Purdue University Research Repository (Purr), Lisa Zilinski

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Linking publications to published datasets in repositories is an important part of the research lifecycle. However, merely linking them does not ensure reusability. It is important for repositories to develop and provide policies for preservation that support the reusability, including lifecycle, ownership, versioning, and attribution aspects of the scholarly process (Bechhofer et al., 2013). In 2103, the Purdue University Libraries developed and implemented a workflow between its institutional repository, its e-Pubs system and its research data repository, Purdue University Research Repository or PURR (Zilinski et al., forthcoming), as well as journal articles linked to published datasets in PURR. This workflow …

Librarian Roles In Institutional Repository Data Set Collecting: Outcomes Of A Research Library Task Force, Mark P. Newton, Christopher C. Miller, Marianne S. Bracke Jan 2011

Librarian Roles In Institutional Repository Data Set Collecting: Outcomes Of A Research Library Task Force, Mark P. Newton, Christopher C. Miller, Marianne S. Bracke

Libraries Research Publications

The collection development role of the academic librarian in the research university library is increasingly subject to significant change as opportunities to build new types of library collections proliferate, particularly with respect to research data. A Purdue Libraries task force was charged with building faculty-produced collections for a data repository prototype. One purpose of the project was to inventory and characterize the resources and skills required of the libraries and its data-collecting librarians. This paper examines the librarian roles and activities that were identified during the project and suggestsways the experience of the task force can inform the roles and …
