Final Recommendations Of The Joint Mla/Olac 33x/34x Task Group, Joint Mla/Olac 33x/34x Task Group

The initial impetus for the formation of the task group came from Jay Weitz's request for input from both our groups as he was working on the OCLC-MARC update 2017, particularly in reference to the 23 additions to the Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes list (http://www.loc.gov/standards/sourcelist/genre-form.html). This request led to the realization that best practices of both groups varied in regard to MARC 344 and 347. It seemed like a good idea to have both groups discuss these same issues together. The group considered 3 issues:
- Inconsistent treatment of RDA and non-RDA terms in MARC 344 and 347
- Consideration …

The World Of Women: Resources, Kellian Clink
Library Services Publications
Women are absent from most standard encyclopedias in academic libraries such as the Europa World Year Book or the States’ Man Yearbook. To provide excellent service to our Gender and Women’s Studies scholars, librarians need to provide alternative sources of country information. Below are directories, country studies, and a listing of some significant websites with authoritative, timely, and substantial information about women around the world.
Some of the resources scoured to find these included the LibGuide: https://guides.library.oregonstate.edu/wgss280, the University of Wisconsin’s Women’s Knowledge Digital Library. In addition, intentional searching for websites and 30 years’ experience helping GWS scholars contributed to …

Capturing Graduate Research: Creation Of The Graduate Online Symposium At Minnesota State University, Mankato, Heidi J. Southworth
Library Services Publications
In 2017, Library Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato, in collaboration with our College of Graduate Studies and Research, launched the first annual Graduate Online Symposium. This event was designed to showcase the research, scholarly and creative activities of our graduate students. Rather than presenting at an on-campus forum, we gave our graduate students (both on-campus and off-campus) an opportunity to be able to share their research in an open, online environment. The Graduate Online Symposium allowed our graduate students the chance to record brief 15-minute presentations about their research and creative activities. These digital presentations were then made available …

At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we've created a collection analysis system that is unique for at least two reasons: (1) we can combine a wider variety of data than we’ve seen elsewhere, (2) we can combine that data more quickly, more efficiently, than we’ve seen elsewhere. Because we can combine data efficiently, we have created reports approaching new kinds of problems. We can be more responsive as a library to the needs of our academic departments. We think our liaison support service is especially interesting and can provide other librarians with new ideas about how to garner support for the …

Disability At Work: Libraries, Built To Exclude, Jessica Schomberg

My goal in writing this chapter is to use critical disability theory grounded in my lived experience to offer some possibilities for improving the working conditions of library employees with disabilities. I begin by providing an overview of some mainstream and critical perspectives on disability. Next, I offer my own insights into being a disabled librarian by taking an intersectional approach to the construction of power. I conclude the chapter by suggesting some ways to bring theory and practice together to make the workplace more inclusive of people. Throughout the chapter, I share some of my experiences as a person …
