Congratulations! Your college or university is ready to plan (or maybe expand!) a campus-wide initiative focused on Open Educational Resources or other textbook alternatives. But OER and affordability programs vary widely in scope, funding, and strategies, described in articles, book chapters, and news stories. At Grand Valley State University, library OER supporters faced this situation when our faculty senate established a task force to identify university-wide strategies for OER and affordable course materials. Think of statistical analysis as a way to advance student learning and improve teaching activities. This may be done with a single course if the analysis is conducted over multiple sections and/or semesters, and is also achievable by librarians teaching single sessions. We will delve into informed learning design to achieve critical thinking, digital literacy, and information literacy through the process of fact checking a website by searching (lateral reading), skimming (click restraint), and double-checking (verification). Do scaffolded activities really build on each other, i.e., are they statistically dependent or independent? Consult statisticians or statistics students to find out.

This presentation will explore perspectives on inclusive hiring practices from both sides of the table. Grand Valley State University Libraries conducted its first diversity residency search in the summer of 2018, which integrated recently developed inclusive recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices. The search committee chair, Annie Bélanger, and one of the successful residency candidates, Preethi Gorecki, team up to dissect the hiring process from both of their perspectives. IntroductionThis study aimed to determine what resources Grand Valley State University (GVSU) alumni, who have graduated from a health sciences program, utilize in clinical practice. The study also assessed alumni viewpoints about the quality and usefulness of those resources. A History Harvest is a collaborative approach to community archiving, which leverages the skills of historians, librarians, or archivists and creates experiential learning opportunities for students to collect, digitize, and share cultural heritage objects and oral histories online. In many cases, archival skills are needed to curate and preserve the digital objects created and collected during History Harvest events. In this session, presenters discuss how we can contribute our skills, knowledge, and repository resources to support our local and regional communities and diversify the historical voice preserved in our collections.

A critical theorist framework is not new to librarianship or its literature. But, what does the practice of critical librarianship look like in the workplace? A panel of practicing librarians who embrace this perspective share their “boots on the ground” experiences and insights with program participants. Panelists represent several functional areas of academic librarianship including technical services, public services, collection development, instruction, and administration. Our goal is to inspire dialog and collaboration among academic librarians who wish to continue challenging power and privilege in transformative ways.
