Developing Effective Scholarly Communication Advocates: The Experiences Of Three University Librarians In Developing Scholarly Communication Programs, Sara N. Fuchs

Libraries are broadening their involvement in the scholarly communication process by advocating author rights and open-access publishing, as well as providing researchers with digital services, such as institutional repositories and e-publishing programs. Academic librarians are in a good position to help raise awareness on their campuses of important scholarly communication training and outreach programs. By training those who work most closely with faculty, libraries are more likely to develop effective scholarly communication advocates. Thus prepared, librarians and library staff can better inform faculty members about their individual and collective options regarding scholarly communication issues.

ACRL's implementation of Information Literacy Standards and the integration of academic librarians into content-based, credit-bearing courses mean that academic librarians are increasingly being called upon to teach on a long-term basis. The Life Of A Wiki: How Georgia State University Library's Wiki Enhances Content Currency And Employee Collaboration, Sarah Steiner, Joel Glogowski

In recent years, the ease of use and collaborative nature of the wiki has made it a popular tool in many libraries. Georgia State University Library has hosted an internal wiki since 2003, and since its inception it has been utilized in many different and innovative ways. This article will provide an overview of some of the more interesting uses of the GSU Library wiki, specifically, its life as a reference guide, training manual, committee meeting and planning ground, home for material price quotes, and finally, as a place for entertaining work-related content.

Information Literacy And Information Seeking Behavior Among Business Majors, Casey Long, Milind Shrikhande

The current generation of college students has used the Internet to access information since the early 1990s. No assessment of information use, quality, variety, and reliability of information generally occurs at both the student and faculty level. In this paper we use a package of teaching methods targeted towards improving information-seeking behavior among graduate and undergraduate business majors. The effectiveness of the teaching package is assessed through an evaluation of student term-papers and quality of resources used. We find that the package of teaching methods implemented does result in significant improvement in information seeking behavior, especially among undergraduate business majors.

It has long been noted that libraries need more diversity in the professional ranks. This situation is now critical with baby boomers soon to retire leaving millennials, who are more racially and ethnically diverse, as the next majority population. The profession will need to recruit a more significant number of millennials to the profession if libraries are to resemble the communities they serve. To get an idea of the current status of management diversity in libraries, managers/supervisors of ARL libraries-in states that contain the highest number of minorities in population-were randomly selected for a survey. The author relates his decision to establish an Ask a Librarian social networking group for students at Valdosta State University in Georgia. One of the appeals of social networking Web sites to users is the variety of services in one interface. He discovered that many students are using the Facebook site while researching. He recommends the creation of individual accounts because Facebook discourages institute-wide accounts.

“Send Me A Nice Little Letter All To Myself”: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’S Fan Mail And Antebellum Poetic Culture, Jill E. Anderson

This paper examines fan mail written to poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow during the 1840s and 1850s, as he made the transition from emerging poet to being one of the best-known and most influential American poets of his time. Longfellow’s admirers wrote him letters praising his poetry, but also making requests for tokens of his presence and esteem: handwritten lines of his poetry, pencils, portraits, locks of hair, and in one case, his daughter’s hand in marriage. Claiming to “know” Longfellow through his poetry, admirers often also identified themselves as being in “debt” to Longfellow for his beautiful poetry, and sought …
