Librarianship as a profession has long been concerned with privacy and user data. As academic libraries move toward embracing learning analytics, questions arise around the ethical use of said data, particularly when it involves students. This paper will explore the role of the library in an institutional learning analytics project. In 2016, the Library at Pace University was approached by the assessment office within the Dyson School of Arts & Sciences and asked to help create a quantitative assessment tool around student learning of information literacy. This lightening talk will give an overview of an active-learning workshop at Lehman College for faculty developing OER. The goals of the 90 minute workshop are to provide practical exercises through which faculty learn how to identify, provide attribution for, and reuse materials that are under copyright, open access (public domain) or under Creative Commons licenses. Research Guides and tutorials on copyright and Creative Commons have been provided to faculty, but the content can be difficult for the novice to absorb. Librarians are the ideal professional group to advocate for privacy and intellectual freedom during online social media product use. Under the central leadership of the American Library Association (ALA), librarians should lead a campaign to urge Internet social media companies to include Privacy by Design principles in their user agreements. This social media privacy campaign would follow librarians’ historical privacy advocacy efforts, and promoting ethical user agreements presents a new venue for librarians’ advocacy in the era of online information access.

Beyond A Common Approach: Teaching Students The Ethical Practice Of Reference, Lisa A. Ellis

This article describes the creation and use of case studies to help teach the ethical practice of reference. There are considerations for applying the case study method in reference which require cumulative preparation through the study and reinforcement of reference values, functions, behaviors, and ethical codes. The strategies for writing ethical case studies in reference are detailed. Overall, case studies on the ethical practice of reference are valued for promoting reflection and active learning in library science students through analysis and discussion.
