Display Of Plenty: Addressing Food Insecurity On Campus, Adrienne Warner, Sarita Cargas, Sarah Johnson

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This chapter describes how undergraduate students created an interactive display in an academic library to address food insecurity among students at their university. In the 2021 fall semester, students in the Honors College course, The Human Rights of Students, created a visual display to present and refine their work on raising awareness of food insecurity. Spurred by the 2020 University of New Mexico Basic Needs Report, they engaged others in conversation through digital and analog media to dispel stigma and promote resources. Not only did it raise awareness, their undergraduate research project embodies several social justice tenets found in the …

Underpinnings And Equal Terms: Using An Exhibit As An Entry Point For Engaging Undergraduate Students In The Research Process, Rebecca Fitzsimmons

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Studying exhibits offers students many entry points for critically evaluating information and images. They are also effective tools for engaging students in research to better understand how to refine their research questions and construct compelling narratives. This poster focuses on the use of the online women’s suffrage themed exhibit Underpinnings and Equal Terms to teach undergraduate students visual and information literacy skills and engage them in archival research. Using this exhibit curated from archival and special collections materials as a starting point, students in an introductory Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies course explored how the overarching theme and subnarratives were …

2020 In Six Words: Micro-Memoirs, Carolyn Weigel, Ursinus College Staff, Ursinus College Faculty, Ursinus College Students

Exhibits

This exhibit highlights events in the lives of students, faculty and staff at Ursinus College during the year 2020. 2020 was a memorable year. There was a pandemic, protests for racial justice, and a presidential election. All were events that we will never forget. The six word micro-memoirs were written by Ursinus community members to preserve their feelings and to be shared with others. Names are used when permission was given, while others wished to remain anonymous. These submissions document the year 2020 and preserve a sense of how students, faculty, and staff experienced the year.

There were sixty-one submissions. …

Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris Jan 2018

Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris

Jennifer Brancato

Digital information resources are a vitally important and increasingly large component of academic libraries’ collection and preservation responsibilities. This includes content converted to and originating from digital form (born-digital). Preserving digital material, such as social media and websites, is essential for ensuring that future generations know everyone’s story, especially those groups which have been historically underrepresented in official records. This presentation will detail the steps undertaken by a digital preservation task force to first assess the weaknesses in current practice, and then develop a plan to implement a digital preservation policy and workflow. As part of the project, the task …

Archives, Artwork, And A Garden: The John Stokes And Mary’S Gardens Collection At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris

Kayla Harris

The University of Dayton hosted a unique exhibit in the spring of 2017 highlighting the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection. In addition to materials from the collection, the exhibit also featured a live garden with flowers named for the Blessed Virgin Mary inside the library, and specially commissioned artwork by artist Holly Schapker. The library was able to reach different audiences and hopes this will serve as an example in thinking of more interactive ways for visitors to experience an archival exhibit.

Partnering Is Such Sweet Sorrow: Establishing Campus And Community Collaboration To Host William Shakespeare’S First Folio At Kansas State University, Casey D. Hoeve

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Between October 2014 and February 2016, Kansas State University partnered with academic and local government and business organizations to host an exhibit displaying William Shakespeare’s First Folio. University and community organizations came together to provide twenty-four programs showcasing the works of William Shakespeare, and to host educational lectures for the community regarding Shakespeare and his contemporaries. The Libraries secured funding to obtain modern Shakespeare materials, filling in critical humanities collection gaps, along with illustrating modern adaptations of Shakespeare’s works to students. The exhibit was a resounding success, attracting more than 4,000 attendees and more than 2,100 participants in programs related …
