In this invited talk, I survey the new emerging discovery tools mostly powered by open scholarly data, from new mega discovery indexes like Lens.org, Semantic Scholar to what I call literature review mapping tools (eg ResearchRabbit, Connected Papers, Litmaps) as well as “AI” power tools like Elicit.org and Scite.ai that use machine learning to enhance discovery in various ways. Academic publishing processes are shaped by the ways in which scholars within the field review and evaluate the work of their peers. In an ideal world, these methods would simply promote the publication of the best forms of research without prejudice or subjectivity. In reality, issues such as Knobloch-Westerwick, Glynn, and Huge’s Matilda effect, Merton’s Matthew effect, Blank’s institution bias, and Robert’s and Verhoef’s gender bias shape the ways that scholarly inquiry are evaluated.

Purpose: This paper is a review of the status of Research Data Management (RDM) efforts in UAE public university libraries. Approach: The investigation is through examining available literature about the topic using region-specific articles when available, librarian comments, and the information provided by UAE university library websites. Existing lessons and policy documents are sought, and plans suggested for local solutions, suggesting avenues for progress.
