Challenges & Rewards With An Institutional Repository, Christopher D. Burns, Fred C. Pond
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
UVM Libraries launched ScholarWorks @ UVM in 2013 to collect, preserve and disseminate scholarly works of faculty, students as well as make collections, reports and other materials more discoverable and available.
This institutional repository has grown to over twenty collections, comprising of student dissertations and theses, public health projects, historic botanical research, Vermont history, faculty publications and more.
Challenges include varied participation across campus, impacting work flow in library positions, and adding another library service.
Author’s works enjoy increased discoverability from all over the world, from low income countries to individuals that seek information without the benefit of library resources. …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The present study is a bibliometric analysis of some selected open access Library and Information Science (LIS) journals indexed in Scopus database during the period 2001 to 2015. The study has covered 10 LIS open access journals with 5208 publications to establish an idea about the pattern of authorship, research collaboration, collaboration index, degree of collaboration, collaboration coefficient, author’s productivity, ranking of prolific authors etc. of said journals. Lotkas’s inverse square law has been applied to know the scientific productivity of authors. Results show that, the covered LIS open access journals are dominant with single authorship pattern. The value of …

Institutional Repository Based Open Access Scholarly Publishing System: A Conceptual Model, W.M. Tharanga D. Ranasinghe, Jun Min Chung
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Although Institutional repositories have been used as a strategy to improve the access to traditional scholarly content (such as e-prints) very often, their role in scholarly publishing has been discussed for a long time. Present study investigates the role of institutional repository as a scholarly publishing platform, and intends to propose an open access scholarly publishing model based on institutional repositories. For that purpose, related literature is reviewed to identify the current trends in scholarly publishing, open access movement and institutional repositories. Moreover, features of selected institutional repositories are discussed along with features of widely used institutional repository software platforms. …
In Pursuit Of Equity: Applying Design Thinking To Develop A Values-Based Open Access Statement, Courtney L. Waugh, Emily Carlisle, Lillian S. Rigling
In Pursuit Of Equity: Applying Design Thinking To Develop A Values-Based Open Access Statement, Courtney L. Waugh, Emily Carlisle, Lillian S. Rigling
Western Libraries Publications
We wanted to rethink how our library supported open access, so we attempted to ask ourselves and our staff why they supported “open” and how they defined “open”. By unpacking our institutional and individual understandings of “open” using design thinking principles, we were able to not only create a strong and value-driven statement, but to also open the door for staff at all levels to engage in policy-making for the organization.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The present study aims to study the status of open access e-book repositories in the OpenDOAR. In order to fulfill the set objectives, relevant data were extracted from the OpenDOAR and was organized in tabular forms based on certain parameters viz: Geographical distribution, Software usage, Language diversity, Subject coverage, Operational status, Repository type and Growth of Repositories. The findings reveal that repositories containing books were 1329 in number, out of which Europe was seen to be the most dominating continent contributing 55.2% of the repositories. The USA topped the list of countries by contributing 10.2% of the repositories. Most of …

The white paper on Business Models for Open Access proposes that there is no single ideal business model for Open Access that can be adopted as standard. It describes the current landscape in which there are multiple approaches to OA publishing, many of which are adopted by OPERAS members to suit their particular circumstances, although the APC and BPC models still predominate especially among commercial publishers. The paper describes the business models adopted by members both from the point of view of publishers, and of service providers such as Knowledge Unlatched, as well as looking at models emerging elsewhere such …
Building Collaborations For Student Research Through Open Access, Dylan Burns, Becky Thoms
Building Collaborations For Student Research Through Open Access, Dylan Burns, Becky Thoms
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
Utah State University's decade’s long tradition of undergraduate and graduate student research is a point of pride, and it’s a source of recognition of institutional and student success as well as a recruitment tool. Yet, because of the ephemeral nature of student populations, it is difficult to build relationships that encourage participation. This presentation will explore collaborations between the library and the Research and Graduate Studies office at Utah State University as an opportunity to sustain the IR through the promotion and preservation of student research. Important is the library's role in ongoing research events on campus, such as Research …

Providing Information And Public Outreach Across Three U.S. State Archaeology Offices During The Age Of Open Access, Samuel Thomas Ayers
Providing Information And Public Outreach Across Three U.S. State Archaeology Offices During The Age Of Open Access, Samuel Thomas Ayers
LSU Master's Theses
Archaeology in the United States has been transformed into a mainstream, practical science over the past fifty years by Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and the federal regulations imposed by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. However, this form of archaeology has been plagued with criticisms since the NHPA’s enactment including issues of access and use of data maintained by state site files. State archaeology is publicly funded yet state and federal legislation often exempts CRM data from freedom of information laws. To mitigate this contradiction and stem the growing body of “gray literature”, new open-access (OA) technologies are …

Funding Community Controlled Open Infrastructure For Scholarly Communication: The 2.5% Commitment Initiative, David W. Lewis, Lori Goetsch, Diane J. Graves, Mike Roy
Library Faculty Research
In August 2017, a short paper, “The 2.5% Commitment,” was distributed on several email lists. The paper proposed that every academic library should commit to invest 2.5% of its total budget to support the common infrastructure needed to create the open scholarly commons. Somewhat to our surprise, the paper and the ideas it contained have generated widespread discussions and interest. The paper was a response to the Elsevier purchase of Bepress and an article by John Wenzler that suggested that academic libraries faced a collective action problem, and that as a result they would never be able to create the …

INTRODUCTION An estimated 53% of the world’s population do not have Internet access. As a consequence, they lack information capital that could be key to bettering their lives. In this practice article, we introduce a sociotechnical system called “World Librarians.” This system, facilitated by a knowledge commons, provides educators, librarians, students, and medical professionals in remote Internet-poor areas of Malawi with access to digital content that they request. OBJECTIVE We describe the social and technical methods by which a team of educators, librarians, students, and information technology specialists in information-privileged environments share educational content to information-disadvantaged communities. METHODS After briefly …

The Role Of Libraries And Librarians In Open Educational Resources In Tanzania: The Case Of Selected Public University Libraries, Chausiku Mtumwa Mwinyimbegu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper examined the Role of Libraries and Librarians in Open Educational Resources (OER) in selected public university libraries in Tanzania. Specifically, the study sought to find out the level of OER awareness among librarians and the role played by libraries and librarians in OER in Tanzania. The study also identified challenges encountered by librarians in promoting access and use of OER. Fifty two librarians of different ranks and academic qualifications from four public university libraries participated in this study. These were selected using simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected through a self administered questionnaire and documentary review. Data …
