Discussion about the MLIS degree and what could be done to produce well-prepared new librarians for the workforce abounds in the current literature. As the ALA Committee on Accreditation re-evaluates its standards, and frustrated librarians continue to add to the over 150 comments on the Library Journal editorial "Can We Talk about the MLS?" by Michael Kelley, the time to re-evaluate the MLIS degree has arrived. There is an increasing emphasis on learning outcomes assessment in the accreditation process in higher education in general and in library education specifically. This mixed methods study investigated the practice of outcomes assessment at master’s programs in library and information studies accredited by the American Library Association in the United States and Canada. Six salient themes emerged from the survey responses of Accreditation Liaison officers and the content analysis of 12 program presentations of MLIS programs. The aim of this paper is to discuss the degree to which English Library and Information Science (LIS) Masters Programs in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) meet the skills and knowledge needs of employers in the library and information studies field. The development of two Masters degrees are outlined including the historical perspective, the reasons for developing these courses, the content of the courses and the current situation regarding associations and accreditation.
