Brave New (Pedagogical) World: Participating In The Selection Of – And Actually Using – A New Course Management System, Amanda Izenstark
Public Services Faculty Presentations
When the University of Rhode Island was faced with the opportunity to upgrade the current course management system (CMS) or to select a new one, two librarians asked for a seat at the table. Once the decision was made, one librarian opted to dive into the new system and run a section of an online 3-credit Information Literacy class using the newly adopted technology. Both the librarian – the first instructor on campus to move an entire class into the system – and the students in the class became pioneers in a new pedagogical world. This paper presentation will describe …
"Being Literate About Something": Discipline-Based Information Literacy In Higher Education, Jill E. Anderson Phd
"Being Literate About Something": Discipline-Based Information Literacy In Higher Education, Jill E. Anderson Phd
University Library Faculty Publications
This report examines how academic librarians and theorists have discussed the issue of discipline-based information literacy instructional approaches since the publication of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education in 2000. As Kate Manuel has recently noted, the Standards balance outcomes and indicators of universal or general information-literacy skills with more discipline-specific skills. Prior to the publication of the ACRL Standards, Stephen Plum argued that disciplinary standards can provide valuable frameworks for library instruction; more recent theorists have focused attention on general skills, some arguing that discipline-based skills are the province of subject faculty, others suggesting that discipline-based …

Intelligent Search From Multiple Resources Of Purdue Library, Dzung Hong, Luo Si, Paul Bracke, Michael Witt, Timothy C. Juchcinski
Libraries Research Publications
Besides web resources that are visible to traditional search engines such as Google or Bing, there are a large portion of the web that is invisible to them. For example, the Purdue Library has access to more than 400 databases. Most of them contain documents that are not reachable by traditional web crawlers due to security, technical limitations or copyright agreement. The only way to search and retrieve documents from those databases is through their service interfaces, which implement different methods of indexing and searching. Given a large number of databases available, it is difficult for users to select the …

What Color Is Your Paratext?, Geoffrey Bilder, Andrée J. Rathemacher
What Color Is Your Paratext?, Geoffrey Bilder, Andrée J. Rathemacher
Technical Services Department Faculty Publications
In the final vision session of the 2009 NASIG Annual Conference, Geoffrey Bilder from CrossRef discussed the problem of how to identify trustworthy scholarly information on the Internet. This problem is exacerbated by readers’ growing distrust of intermediaries such as publishers and librarians, by the fact that the Internet lacks the traditions that have developed in scholarly communication to ensure trust, and by the sheer amount of information now readily available. Paratext is understood as anything outside of a text that sets expectations about that text. In the past, paratext, for example a publisher logo, provided important clues as to …

After this situation was documented for seven years, it was felt that gathering these numbers was no longer necessary. Therefore, 2008/09 is the last year for which these …

Moderated by Maria Collins of North Carolina State University, discussion at this open forum on the future of library systems touched on open-source library systems, cloud computing, new initiatives by the Open Library Environment (OLE) Project and OCLC, and desired characteristics of future integrated library systems. Most participants had limited experience with next-generation library systems and attended the open forum with the desire to broaden their understanding, although some were exposed to or had worked with the open-source discovery tool VuFind, the OLE Project, WorldCat Local, and the OCLC Web-scale service. A strong desire to customize library systems to meet …
