Retooling The Profession: Librarianship In An Era Of Accountability And Competition, Gregory A. Smith Oct 2009

Retooling The Profession: Librarianship In An Era Of Accountability And Competition, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Librarianship has changed substantially in recent years. We who work in libraries must continually acquire new knowledge and skills. We must adapt to the reality that academic libraries, along with their parent institutions, face increased accountability. The functions that many of us have thought to be at the core of our profession are slipping from our grasp and will leave behind a mere managerial role. Nevertheless, many academic libraries will find a viable future by adopting and taking seriously the role of supporting learning. As we look at disruptive innovators in the information and learning scene, we should consider carefully …

Identify the skill sets needed by staff; 4. Create an action plan for redefining the …

The Role Of Web Services In Portal Design: Approaches For An Algerian University Library, Mohamed Ridda Laouar, Richard Hacken, Mathew Miles Sep 2009

The Role Of Web Services In Portal Design: Approaches For An Algerian University Library, Mohamed Ridda Laouar, Richard Hacken, Mathew Miles

Faculty Publications

Purpose - Today, with access to enormous quantities of information facilitated by the web, boundaries between remote and local source documents become invisible. This is of extreme interest for libraries in Algeria, whose local holdings are very limited. Taking for inspiration the idea that a networked environment can benefit less affluent nations, we present a conceptual model for the design of a scholarly web portal at the University of Tébessa, with which we hope to create scholarly work stations that combine local and remote holdings, tools and documents.

Design/methodology/approach - We present an outlined conceptual model of library portal architecture, …

Work Of The Web Weavers: Web Development In Academic Libraries, Maira Bundza, Patricia Fravel Vander Meer, Maria A. Perez-Stable

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

Although the library’s Web site has become a standard tool for seeking information and conducting research in academic institutions, there are a variety of ways libraries approach the often challenging — and sometimes daunting — process of Web site development and maintenance. Three librarians at Western Michigan University explored issues related to this topic by conducting a Web-based survey, which was sent to two librarians — Web services and reference / public services — at 149 academic institutions. Survey findings are discussed, including references to Web departments and committees, priority setting, Web authoring, soliciting input, outsourcing, content management systems, redesigns, …

Academic Library Services For Users With Developmental Disabilities: Partnership Of Access And Syracuse University Libraries, Adina Mulliken, Ann Atkins

Publications and Research

Syracuse University Library and Access partnered to provide library orientations to six Syracuse University students who have developmental disabilities. Access is a service that supports college course attendance for students who have developmental or cognitive disabilities. Students with developmental disabilities are being included in college life more and more. As this occurs, academic libraries will be providing more services to this population. We hope Syracuse University’s experience will be useful for other libraries to build on as they develop services. Additionally, we discuss opportunities to improve services for all students by focusing on students with developmental disabilities.

Discovering New Avenues Of Promotion: Collaboration With The Division Of Research, Annette M. Healy Jan 2009

Discovering New Avenues Of Promotion: Collaboration With The Division Of Research, Annette M. Healy

Library Scholarly Publications

At research universities, the library plays a critical role in meeting the information needs of researchers. As libraries expand their electronic resources, researchers are less likely to visit the library and may be unaware of available services and resources. In addition, not all research team members are reached during traditional library orientation sessions. In this electronic age, finding opportunities to promote library resources to researchers is increasingly challenging.

At Wayne State University, collaboration between the University Libraries and the Division of Research has led to several new avenues for promoting library services and resources. The University Libraries have participated in …

The Growth Of Journals Publishing, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King Jan 2009

The Growth Of Journals Publishing, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

For the last 60 years, scholarly journals have witnessed unprecedented growth, controversy and change. Since the late 1940s, the number of scholarly journals has increased sharply, with hundreds of new titles and new topics being introduced each decade. Beginning in the late 1960s and especially since the 1990s, the form of journals has been transformed into digital versions that speed both access and delivery of articles to readers and provide enhanced functionality. E-journals are now more popular with libraries and readers than their print counterparts, although both forms continue to coexist for a majority of titles. This combination of more …

Positioning Libraries To Support The Goals Of Higher Education Institutions: The Peabody Academic Library Leadership Institute, Sharon A. Weiner, Patricia Senn Breivik, Timothy Caboni, Dennis Clark

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This article describes the genesis of Vanderbilt University's Peabody Academic Library Leadership Institute as an outcome of a particular philosophy. That philosophy is based on the concept that to fulfill their potential contributions, academic libraries need to direct their planning, resources, and services to support the priorities of their parent institutions. This article addresses the need for campus-focused leadership training; higher education leadership training for academic librarians; and the higher education context for libraries. It describes why Vanderbilt's Peabody College of Education and Human Development initiated a professional development institute for librarians. It describes the institute's history, curriculum, and assessment …

Cultivating The Librarian Within: Effectively Lntegrating Library Lnstruction Into Freshman Composition, Jesse Ulmer, Nancy E. Fawley Jan 2009

Cultivating The Librarian Within: Effectively Lntegrating Library Lnstruction Into Freshman Composition, Jesse Ulmer, Nancy E. Fawley

Library Faculty Publications

It has become common practice for library instruction to be included in lower-level college composition courses. Students are typically required to visit the library once or twice a semester to receive instruction on how to find books and journal articles for an upcoming writing assignment that incorporates formal research. But does this current model of instruction truly address course outcomes that seek to produce students who are information literate, critical thinkers and life-long learners? Faculty who teach such courses are often reluctant to surrender precious class time to a librarian, but this paper argues that the merging of bibliographic instruction …

Librarian Faculty Status: What Does It Mean In Academia?, Nathan D. Hosburgh Jan 2009

Librarian Faculty Status: What Does It Mean In Academia?, Nathan D. Hosburgh

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Although much has been written over the years about whether or not professional academic librarians should have faculty status, there has been far less in the literature concerning the ambiguity of faculty status. In this paper, faculty status is defined according to the American College and Research Libraries’ “Standards for faculty status for college and university librarians”. Various studies and situations are examined in order to cover the spectrum of faculty status that exists in academic libraries in the United States, however this is not meant to be conclusive, but point out that there is no definition consistently applied. Faculty …
