Strengthening Skills: Hosting A Research Boot Camp, Stephanie Soule, Heidi Gauder
Strengthening Skills: Hosting A Research Boot Camp, Stephanie Soule, Heidi Gauder
Heidi Gauder
Instruction librarians and an academic department formed a community of practice and developed a three-day research “boot camp” for graduate research assistants. The students gained critical research skills, which benefited their department, while the librarians experimented with new instruction techniques.

Observing Graduate Students' Use Of Library Space, Marni R. Harrington, Amanda Humphreys

Based on a “sweeps” study in public libraries (Given & Leckie, 2003), this observational research tracks how the physical space and resources are used in a faculty-supported graduate library. We create a snapshot of what is going on in the library at a given moment in time, and then compile the results to determine how users behave in our space. These results will inform planning for an upcoming move.

How can librarians engage with graduate student education and research? Often, graduate student orientations of academic departments include only introductory information about the library and are discipline-focused. To address a need for better library support for graduate students increasingly pursuing interdisciplinary research and study, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries initiated a series of workshops designed to integrate into the workflow of graduate students. Presenters will discuss how the program evolved from a one-library pilot program into a coordinated series of workshops across multiple campus libraries. Details about workshop topics, structure, design, and promotion and series feedback and next steps will …

Recent LibQual+ (2004) and Off-campus Satisfaction (2002, 2006) surveys at Western Michigan University revealed that graduate students had information needs that were not being met. Many lack awareness of resources and the necessary research skills for performing graduate level research, yet instructors are reluctant to relinquish class time for library sessions and the students themselves are reluctant to seek the individual help they need. In 2005-6 we collaborated with the Graduate College to offer new graduate workshops that were not class related but were instead part of a Strategies for Success series that was already in place. These workshop topics …
