Student perceptions of teachers can influence the success of instruction, and library instruction is no exception. Understanding the mindset of students can help academic librarians prepare for in-person and asynchronous classes and create instructional materials. By anticipating students’ impressions, librarians can challenge false assumptions and improve interactions. This poster highlights findings from a large study of how undergraduate students at one institution perceive academic librarians.

Subject Guides provides James Madison University (JMU) students with a curated list of essential databases and library materials relevant to their major. The goal of these guides is to enable students to create the best possible research and creative projects. The purpose of this study is to conduct usability tests of JMU’s Subject Guides, and to identify methods to close the gap between librarians’ perceptions of effective online pathfinders and students’ ability to successfully take advantage of them.
