Beyond Thoughts And Prayers: Understanding Mass Violence Through An Investigation Of Masculinity In The White Nationalist Movement, Paige Chun Lai Toop Apr 2020

Beyond Thoughts And Prayers: Understanding Mass Violence Through An Investigation Of Masculinity In The White Nationalist Movement, Paige Chun Lai Toop

Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Award

Mass violence is a growing concern in the United States. In August 2019, two mass shootings occurred less than 24 hours apart, but far too often these incidents are lost in the waves of hashtags, tweets, and posts offering thoughts and prayers, but such attention rarely results in action. I hypothesize that the current conceptualization and enforcement of masculinity breeds resentment and frustration toward women and when taken to the extreme results in violence. Based on data collected on Stormfront.org, the first major hate website, three archetypes were created, the New Victim, the Critic, and the Traditionalist. Each engages with …

Public Perceptions Of #Metoo Gay Male Sexual Assault Disclosure: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Facebook Comments, Eleanor Young, Rowan Salton, Hanna Estes

Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Award

The present study explores public perceptions of male victimization in the age of #MeToo. Utilizing qualitative content analysis, Facebook comments from popular news media pages’ breaking news posts of Kevin Spacey’s alleged assault against Anthony Rapp were analyzed for themes. After coding, six initial themes emerged: indirect blame, victim support, non-support of victim(s), perpetrator support, non-support of perpetrator, and trauma distancing. These themes resulted in three overarching findings. Facebook commenters either commented on circumstances surrounding the victim, acts or inactions taken by the perpetrator, or they distanced themselves from the trauma by commenting on happenings separate from the alleged abuse. …

Recognition, Internalization, Growth: Intuitive Design For Archival Representation, Jaime L. Ganzel

Graduate Student Symposium

Although there is a pressing need for archival description and access systems to be more intuitive and user-friendly, the uniqueness of archival records presents significant barriers to establishing simplistic and standardized conventions for the representation of archival materials. Indecipherable finding aids and access tools prevent new and inexperienced researchers from accessing the unique information and documentation held in archives. This article aims to help open the archival record to new and non-traditional archival users, support individual development of archival literacy skills, and cultivate a greater level of archival awareness in our society by developing a usable model for archivists to …

Women of Color in Speculative Fiction: An Annotated Bibliography is tertiary electronic resource which focuses upon authors who are women of color (i.e., non-Caucasian) and who write speculative fiction for adult and young adult audiences. Examples of these authors include Octavia Butler, N. K. Jemisin, Daina Chaviano, Jewelle Gomez, and Malinda Lo. For some background, “speculative fiction” is an umbrella term for science fiction, fantasy, and some horror, all of which have literary and popular merit (Urbanski 2007). For Your Enrichment: Assistance Animals In The Library: How One Academic Library Developed Best Practices, Rebecca M. Marrall Oct 2016

For Your Enrichment: Assistance Animals In The Library: How One Academic Library Developed Best Practices, Rebecca M. Marrall

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Effectively addressing concerns about assistance animals in any library setting is often problematic due to a lack of awareness about assistance animals in general, which then leads to uncertainty on how to proceed in these situations. Library personnel, regardless of library type, are often unaware of legal definitions of assistance animals. When compelled to respond to a patron complaint about “a dog in the library,” many library professionals are uncertain about which questions they may legally ask a patron who is accompanied by an animal. This uncertainty then creates concern about how to act in these situations, and thus, many …
