Integrating Digital Resources Into A Traditional University Research Library, Fiona C. Coutinho, Caroline M. Eastman, Christopher B. Hare, Robert F. Skinder

We describe the ongoing Electronic Library Project at the University of South Carolina. The goal of this project is the integration of digital resources within a traditional university research library. The first step was the development of an Electronic Science Library (ESL), followed by an Electronic Academic Library (EAL) which includes non-science subjects. We discuss the structure of these libraries and comment on our experiences with their implementation and use. The prototype implementation used static web pages, a technology which we knew would not scale up well. This implementation is being replaced by a database system using SQL Server and …

This brochure describes a Department of Rare Books & Special Collections exhibit of collection materials about camellias. The collection was formed by Mrs. Sheffield Phelps (Claudia Lea). The Phelps Memorial Collection of Garden Books was donated to the University by Miss Phelps in 1959 on her mother’s death, with additional donations in the 1970s after the dispersal of the Phelps home. The exhibition tells the story of how camellias were brought in the early 1700s from the Far East to Europe, and then to America, how they were identified and named, and how the major varieties were developed by 19th-century …

Digital Image Managers For The New Millennium: A Museum/University Collaboration, Samantha K. Hastings, Museums And The Web 1999

The University of North Texas and the African American Museum in Dallas are partners in a program designed to produce expert managers of digital images and information. The School of Library and Information Sciences in cooperation with the School of Visual Arts received a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library services to build a collaborative program that includes a digital imaging laboratory and fellowships for students in a Certificate of Advanced Study Program.
