Alma Normalization Rules: The Basics And Beyond, Julene L. Jones, Susan Wynne
Library Presentations
Alma normalization rules are a powerful tool for editing and enhancing bibliographic and holding records, in batch or individually. This presentation will describe how to read and write normalization rules for beginner and intermediate users. We will cover the syntax and logic of normalization rules, how and why to add a rule as a process, common use cases and real-world examples, and best practices and tricks we’ve learned along the way. Breaking Out Of The Box: Transforming Archival Collections And Workflows Through Collaborative Description Projects, Cindy Cline, Libby Hertenstein, Lindy Smith, Rachel Howard, Rebecca Pattillo, Ruth E. Bryan
Library Presentations
Archivists and archival collections can often be siloed into the “special” corner of their parent library: under described, underutilized, and often even unknown. Finding a path out of isolation may require taking a new look at collection management needs and considering new partners in the work. Collaboration with colleagues can result in positive ripple effects that extend beyond the initial project goals. This session will highlight three innovative description projects where archivists partnered with non-archivists to improve access to targeted collections and will detail how their collaborations transformed their archival collections, work structures and relationships, and, ultimately, their users. After …
Mainstreaming University Publications: Designing Collaboration Across Library Units For Discovery And Access, Cindy Cline, Ruth E. Bryan
Mainstreaming University Publications: Designing Collaboration Across Library Units For Discovery And Access, Cindy Cline, Ruth E. Bryan
Library Presentations
Various divisions, branches, and departments within the University of Kentucky Libraries collect University publications, most especially the University Archives. Depending on the reasons for acquisition and the Library area's descriptive practices, the publications are more or less discoverable by fellow librarians and by researchers. Is it possible to develop workflows that allow the University Archivist to collect and maintain University publications at a collection or unit level, while simultaneously providing bibliographic item-level access to the same publications? In today's environment of high levels of technology, library and archives online management systems, and discovery systems, is it possible for libraries and …

Providing Access To And Discovery Of Oral Histories At The University Of Kentucky, Marsha Seamans, Kathryn Lybarger
Library Presentations
The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky is recognized around the world as a leader and innovator in the collection and preservation of oral histories. The more than 9,000 interviews in our collection provide a unique look into Kentucky and American history.
While the Center for Oral History has developed an excellent stand-alone catalog of the collections, projects and interviews in the collection utilizing Drupal and DACS, we wanted to provide discovery through our online catalog, our discovery system (InfoKat Discovery) and WorldCat.
This project had a number of decision points:
- Since discovery is …
Regular Expressions In Practice, Kathryn Lybarger
Regular Expressions In Practice, Kathryn Lybarger
Library Presentations
Regular expressions are not just for programmers anymore; they are supported by common software and systems used for cataloging and metadata, and allow for very powerful search and replace, even complete reformatting of library data! In this webinar, we’ll discuss the building blocks of regular expressions, practice identifying what they match (and do not match!), and consider how we can use them to make everyday library work more efficient.
Starting Over: Coding To Work With Alma After Voyager, Kathryn Lybarger
Starting Over: Coding To Work With Alma After Voyager, Kathryn Lybarger
Library Presentations
When the University of Kentucky was a Voyager library, I wrote a variety of tools to support our processes, ranging from tiny one-line macros to larger software packages. Now that we've migrated to Alma/Primo, everything has changed! Many of the ways I extended Voyager are part of Alma by default, and Alma's community (and available APIs) encourage even further development. In this presentation, I will describe some differences between the two systems, how they affected the types of support tools I wanted, and the ways I was able to create them.

Uploading Records To The Coe Database: Easy As 1,2,3!, Sandra Mcaninch, Julene L. Jones, Mary Clark
Library Presentations
As part of the Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP), two pieces of software were developed to support the collection development activities of FDLP libraries in the Southeast. Most are very familiar with the ASERL Disposition Database, but some may have forgotten its quiet counter-part, the ASERL COE Database. This database is comprised of brief cataloging records that indicate holdings for all Center of Excellence (COE) libraries (and other contributing depository libraries) in the Southeast and serves as a tool for analyzing the completeness of COE collection(s) and to identify gaps.
To create a database that is as comprehensive as possible, …

The newest module in the Voyager suite, Global Data Change, allows for batch editing of bibliographic, holdings and authority records. The University of Kentucky Libraries has used this module since 2012, and will share specifics about the top ten (or so) projects that have been implemented using this module. Projects include several significant enhancements to bibliographic variable fields, including changes due to RDA implementation, record deletion, location changes after collections have been moved, the removal of obsolete information, the addition of local standard notes, and the addition of authorized access points.

Authority control, or the maintenance of consistent access points throughout a catalog, may not be the most exciting topic in the library world, but is increasing in importance as metadata schemas evolve and linked data applications emerge. UK has developed multiple strategies for maintaining its catalog's authority control, and, most recently, has undertaken NACO training!

Cataloging ebooks is difficult to do well, as they are often purchased in large collections, sometimes with only low-quality cataloging copy available. MARC records may be provided upfront in a large batch, or trickle in one at a time as they become available. Records may contain links that point nowhere, to the wrong book, or to an offer to sell you the book you already own. Loading records sight unseen may introduce inconsistency or overlay good print records with poor electronic ones, making the catalog much more difficult to search.
This article describes in more detail the major challenges in …
