Preserving And Promoting Institutional Heritage: A Descriptive Study Of The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Members’ Archives, Eli Arnold
Eli Arnold
Academic institutions, even small colleges and universities, acknowledge the importance of archives in order to preserve and promote their institutional heritage. For the past half-century, an increasing number of institutions are establishing and supporting archives. Two over-arching questions soon arise: first, how is an academic institution, especially one with limited funding and staffing, to achieve success with their archives? Second, what can be learned through the shared experience of institutions that currently support academic archives? The author evaluated the websites of the archives of the twelve colleges that are members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). In addition, the …

Turning A Passion Into A Research Project, Maira Bundza

As a Latvian-American I became interested in librarianship when assigned to set up a library at the Latvian Studies Center in Kalamazoo. The library was dispersed after Latvia regained its independence, and I started working at Western Michigan University. I have recently turned my research focus back to my ethnic heritage and am excited to be able to combine my professional skills with my passion. I have started looking at not only Latvian, but Estonian and Lithuanian collections in the U.S. As the communities age, what is happening to their libraries, archives and museums? As the information world turns digital, …
Archival Considerations For The Truth And Reconciliation Commission Of Canada, Mary G. Kosta
Archival Considerations For The Truth And Reconciliation Commission Of Canada, Mary G. Kosta
Mary G Kosta
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada is currently conducting hearings across Canada, and its records will need to be archived. The critical importance of preserving and providing access to such an archive will be discussed in this paper. Best practices for this archive will be exemplified by looking at the experiences of archivists working with truth commissions and international criminal justice tribunals in Africa. Additionally, Australian recommendations concerning aboriginal access to government records will be reviewed. Considerations related to aboriginal oral records will be noted, since these records are at the heart of the archives of the TRC …

Postmodernism, Processing, And The Profession: Towards A Theoretical Reading Of Minimal Standards, Melanie Griffin
Melanie Griffin
While the ramifications of minimal standards processing for practice are well-documented, the theoretical questions which Greene and Meissner's 2005 article "More Product, Less Process" raises are not. This article seeks to address the broader ideological and theoretical questions involved in recent minimal standards processing recommendations through analysis of Greene and Meissner’s original article and the immediate responses and case studies which it generated, in order to relate this body of literature to theory-driven notions of archival administration.4 By identifying theoretical issues in writings on MPLP rather than focusing on practice alone, it is possible to move beyond the pejorative, reductive …
