Retaining Participants In Volunteer Computing Projects, Peter Darch
Retaining Participants In Volunteer Computing Projects, Peter Darch
Peter Darch
Volunteer computing projects (VCPs) have been set up by groups of scientists to recruit members of the public who are asked to donate spare capacity on their personal computers to the processing of scientific data or computationally intensive models. VCPs serve two purposes: to acquire significant computing capacity and to educate the public about science. A particular challenge for these scientists is the retention of volunteers as there is a very high drop-out rate. This paper develops recommendations for scientists and software engineers setting up or running VCPs regarding which strategies to pursue in order to improve volunteer retention rates. …

The Professional Development Of Academic Librarians: How Should Institutions Contribute To The Process?, Gregory A. Smith
The Professional Development Of Academic Librarians: How Should Institutions Contribute To The Process?, Gregory A. Smith
Gregory A. Smith
Professional development is universally recognized in education and librarianship as imperative for ongoing effectiveness. Most—though not all—academic libraries support professional development through financial assistance and release time. However, while funding and release time are necessary to professional growth, they are not sufficient. The role of the leader as a steward of organizational culture suggests that academic library administrators should concern themselves with fostering an environment conducive to their subordinates’ professional development. Innovative professional development programs in place at a number of academic libraries stand as a corrective to the seemingly haphazard practices of many libraries and librarians. Further research on …
Intellectual Freedom And The Bible College Library, Gregory A. Smith
Intellectual Freedom And The Bible College Library, Gregory A. Smith
Gregory A. Smith
A number of evangelical Christian authors have grappled with the subject of intellectual freedom--few, though, in the context of Bible college libraries. The secular concept of intellectual freedom is incompatible with Bible colleges in that it is absolutist and shuns any standard of morality. Theological, educational, and pragmatic factors indicate that Bible college libraries should provide access to a broad range of information resources, irrespective of the positions they espouse, except to the extent that such openness poses a serious threat to the fulfillment of their sponsoring institutions’ mission. To this end, Bible college libraries should take positive action to …
Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith
Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith
Gregory A. Smith
Recent changes in the world of information present unique challenges and opportunities for the dissemination of evangelical literature. This report suggests six ways that the Association of Christian Librarians can support evangelical education and scholarship in a context that is increasingly global, Web-based, and free from the confines of the traditional college campus. Implementing a combination of these strategies could make evangelical literature much more accessible via the Web, the dominant delivery platform of our day. However, choices among available strategies must take account of competition within the marketplace.
Retooling The Profession: Librarianship In An Era Of Accountability And Competition, Gregory A. Smith
Retooling The Profession: Librarianship In An Era Of Accountability And Competition, Gregory A. Smith
Gregory A. Smith
Librarianship has changed substantially in recent years. We who work in libraries must continually acquire new knowledge and skills. We must adapt to the reality that academic libraries, along with their parent institutions, face increased accountability. The functions that many of us have thought to be at the core of our profession are slipping from our grasp and will leave behind a mere managerial role. Nevertheless, many academic libraries will find a viable future by adopting and taking seriously the role of supporting learning. As we look at disruptive innovators in the information and learning scene, we should consider carefully …

(R)Evolution In The Information Industry: What The Information Industry Can Learn From The Music Industry (Slide Set), Amy M. Elliott
Amy M. Elliott
A failure to adapt to and adopt new and changing technology caused the music industry to crash, a fate that the information industry currently faces. This proposal is an overview of the music industry's crash, as a result of changing technology, and the lessons that the information industry can learn from the music industry's mistakes in order to avoid its own crash now that technology allows for quicker, easier, and cheaper publication. In the 80s & 90s record companies refused to effectively adapt to and adopt the new technologies of CDs, MP3s, and digital recording. This resulted in a slow …
Good Enough: The New Face Of Reference, Doug Way, Colleen Lyon
Good Enough: The New Face Of Reference, Doug Way, Colleen Lyon
Doug Way
College students today flock to Wikipedia in droves, while at the same time academic libraries continue to pour time and money into print reference collections that are rarely used and take huge amounts of our libraries’ limited space. While libraries have responded to space and access concerns by turning to electronic books, title-by-title selection is a time-consuming affair for a collection that sees low use. In this session we will examine the factors that have led to the point where libraries need to reexamine how they collect and provide access to reference sources. Through a content analysis of reference transcripts …

Integrating Research Into Lis Field Experiences In Academic Libraries, Selinda Adelle Berg, Kristin Hoffmann, Diane Dawson
Kristin Hoffmann
Field experiences function as a link between LIS theory and practice. Students should be provided with an experience that is a true reflection of the professional environment. The increasing focus on research by academic librarians provides an opportunity and responsibility to integrate research into the field experiences of LIS students.

Librarians at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) have been involved with the School of Sciences' SCI 120 Learning Communities for First-Year Students since their introduction in 1997. From curriculum development to teaching in the classroom, librarian expertise and experience has been valued and sought out. However, with this success comes challenges. How do we (the science librarians) manage the extensive time commitment required by these courses? How do we streamline the grading of library exercises? How can the instructional team members easily share instructional materials? As the title of the 2004 LOEX conference states, the IUPUI science librarians have been …

Sound Ethics For Data Repositories, Kevin Miller
Kevin C. Miller
This is my complete portfolio (final project) for the MLIS at the University of California, Los Angeles (CV removed). Taking the discipline of ethnomusicology as an example, I contend that data repositories of unedited, digitized field recordings, while invaluable to the scholarly value chain, must develop new conceptual and physical infrastructures to live up to their own ethical standards and accommodate the interests of the source communities they represent. The portfolio also includes supporting papers produced during the course of my MLIS degree. Advisor: Anne Gilliland.

Making A Weak Link Stronger: Incorporating Information Literacy Into A Semester-Long Freshman Seminar, Tammy Sugarman, Anne Page Mosby
Tammy Sugarman
The freshman seminar, GSU 1010, is our campus’ response to the national trend to facilitate students’ transition from high school to college. Fall semester 2000 was the second year that Georgia State University offered new students the option of registering for a freshman seminar, and the first year that librarians participated as instructors. Our motivations for teaching this course were twofold: to move beyond the traditional “one-shot” library instruction class by teaching the same set of students for the entire semester, and to incorporate information literacy objectives into the three credit semester long course. This paper is a case study …
