Meeting At The Junction: Connecting Scholarly Communication And Instruction Librarians For Learner-Centered Pedagogy With The Institutional Repository, Bebe S. Chang, Charlotte A. Barna

Staff Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

Institutional repositories represent an intersection between academic information literacy and scholarly communication to create learner-centered librarianship (LCL). In order to position LCL, this session proposes aligning the efforts of scholarly communication and reference by incorporating IR pedagogical practices into an interdisciplinary curriculum for experiential learning.

Mutualism At Work: Redefining The Library's Role In The Everyday University Process, Keri Baker, Jaime Goldman

Staff Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

The Halmos College of Natural Science and Oceanography at Nova Southeastern University has been at the forefront of open accessibility and transparency of scholarly output for the institution. As one of the pioneers for the institutional repository, NSUWorks, Halmos College has been able to make great headway in creating new opportunities for the students, staff, and faculty to create and showcase their research. This presentation aims to show how the Oceanographic Campus Library has created a mutualistic relationship with administrative staff and faculty to create a cultural change in how we, as a college, operate. From subtle changes in library-managed …

Audiovisual Media Annotation Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software: A Comparative Analysis, Liliana Melgar Estrada, Marijn Koolen Mar 2018

Audiovisual Media Annotation Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software: A Comparative Analysis, Liliana Melgar Estrada, Marijn Koolen

The Qualitative Report

The variety of specialized tools designed to facilitate analysis of audio-visual (AV) media are useful not only to media scholars and oral historians but to other researchers as well. Both Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) packages and dedicated systems created for specific disciplines, such as linguistics, can be used for this purpose. Software proliferation challenges researchers to make informed choices about which package will be most useful for their project. This paper aims to present an information science perspective of the scholarly use of tools in qualitative research of audio-visual sources. It provides a baseline of affordances based on functionalities …

The Walking Dead Genealogy: Unsubstantiated Criticisms Of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Qdas) And The Failure To Put Them To Rest, Kristi Jackson, Trena Paulus, Nicholas H. Woolf Mar 2018

The Walking Dead Genealogy: Unsubstantiated Criticisms Of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Qdas) And The Failure To Put Them To Rest, Kristi Jackson, Trena Paulus, Nicholas H. Woolf

The Qualitative Report

The authors conduct an exposé on the deterministic denunciations of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) and how citation errors keep these criticisms alive. They use a zombie metaphor to describe more than two decades of battling these seemingly mindless assessments of QDAS that keep coming –despite their decay – and simply will not die. Focusing exclusively on the criticism of separation/distancing, which alleges that the computer and the software interfere with the researcher’s familiarity with the data, the authors trace one current strand of this criticism through a literature genealogy. Three citation errors (half-truth, proxy, and hearsay) are identified to …

Traditional journal analysis for the identification of disciplines is limited in developing areas of study due to the lack of journals specific to that area of study. Identifying knowledge domains worthy of study for the identification of developing disciplines has been difficult.

Conferences are at the forefront of building knowledge in scientific communities, particularly in technology related sectors, but less than 10% of conference proceedings are available in conventional knowledge databases. As a result, conference proceedings as a previously unconsidered knowledge domain, may provide the knowledge domain worthy of analysis to identify developmental and incremental change within developing areas of …
