National Native American Heritage month is a time to honor the contributions, achievements, sacrifices, and cultural and historical legacy of the original inhabitants of the United States.

A wide range of library materials have been pulled and placed on display to coincide with Native American Heritage month. Included are works on Native American history, art, sports, Native American literature and lore, contemporary fiction including Native American characters, music, health, and law.

Historical Poinsettia Display, Maggie Mason Smith

The poinsettia has undergone a remarkable transformation since the day some 800 years ago when the Aztecs plucked it from the wilds of Mexico to decorate their courtyards and medicate the infirm.

From November 9 to 28, wild, heirloom, and modern poinsettias in full flower will grace the lobby of Clemson University’s Cooper Library for everyone to appreciate. Banners and historical documents will accompany the display to help guide visitors along the implausible route the humble poinsettia traveled from gangly Mexican shrub to iconic Christmas flower.

The Vikings: History Channel's Fact Or Fictionalized View Of The Norse Expansion, Gypsey Teague

The History Channel’s The Vikings is a fictionalized history of Ragnar Lothbrok who during the 8th and 9th Century traveled and raided the British Isles and all the way to Paris. This paper will look at the factual Ragnar and the fictionalized character as presented to the general viewing public.

Find Your Park Metadata, Rachel Wittmann, Christopher Vinson, Joshua Morgan

The Open Parks Network (OPN) project digitized over 330k items from U.S. national and state parks. While the mass digitization effort was a logistically challenging operation, ensuring metadata for this material added another layer of complexity this offsite-managed project. In the best case scenario, the parks provided existing descriptive metadata, but this still lacked preferred elements. In many cases, digitized material had never been cataloged by the park.

To orchestrate adequate descriptive metadata, OPN employed tactics to catalog this large-scale project. This session encourages an exchange of experiences and ideas from others when faced with similar situations.

2015 Road Scholars Display, Maggie Mason Smith

In 2013, the College of Art, Architecture, and Humanities hosted the first annual Road Scholars lecture series.

The Road Scholars series brings professors from the Tiger’s ACC football rivals to Clemson to present their current research, which is followed by a response from a Clemson humanities faculty member. This year, lectures will be held October 2nd, October 9th, October 16th, November 6th, and November 20th.

National Endowment Of The Arts & Humanities Display, Maggie Mason Smith

On September 29, 1965, the National Endowment for the Humanities was established to “encourage the development of the humanities by supporting research and awarding fellowships, strengthening teaching of the humanities, and fostering public use and enjoyment of the humanities.”

This display features works produced by current and former faculty members who received NEH grants; in most cases, the works are directly related to the grant received.

Disabilities are a challenge, not a limitation. With that in mind, this display contains information on several disabilities including deafness, autism, cerebral palsy, blindness, and Asperger's. Also included are aspects related to disabilities such as inclusive education, discrimination and sociology of disability.

On July 15th, author, editor, and professor Edgar Lawrence Doctorow died at the age of 84.

With awards and honors spanning nearly four decades, Doctorow was described as one of the most important American novelists of the 20th century.

A display of items by or based on works by Doctorow is currently located atop the New Books shelving on the 4th floor of Cooper Library; the items will be on display throughout the month and are available for checkout at the Information Services Desk.

Early Norse Navigation Tools, Gypsey Teague

Presentations

In the History Channel series Vikings Ragnar Loðbrok tells his brother Rollo he wants to sail west to raid the rich lands there. His brother points out that no one can sail across the open water. In this scene Ragnar pulls out two tools that while being interesting in the development of the story are both also historically factual. This paper will discuss these two tools, the sȯl-skuggafjöl and the sólarsteinn, as well as the bearing dial and a more observational technique of polar mirages used by the early Norse sailors as they explored the North Atlantic waters.

Many library publishing programs emerged from institutional repositories. This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. Clemson’s Department of English is hosting its 8th Annual Literary Festival Wednesday, March 25th through Friday, March 27th.

Selected works from the fourteen authors attending the festival – including Emporium, The Orphan Master’s Son, and Parasites like Us by Pulitzer Prize winner Adam Johnson – have been pulled and placed on display atop the TAPS shelving on the 4th floor of Cooper Library.
