Planting The Seeds Of Leadership: Growing Your Skills At Any Level, Jenni Burke

Scholarship and Professional Work

Leadership training has traditionally been reserved for those in formal management and administrator positions, but there is a wealth of research that shows the benefits of providing this training to employees at all levels. Organizations that invest in leadership training draw talented employees and are better positioned to withstand crises. Professionals who attend workshops and training report greater opportunities for personal and professional growth and increased satisfaction at work. Intended for library staff of all levels, I will address the benefits of attending leadership training, such as improved communication, increased community impact, and greater work culture of care and support. …

What's The Buzz On Library Publishing? Developing A Consortial Support Model For Open Access Publishing, Amanda Hurford, Sue Wiegand, Olivia Macisaac

Scholarship and Professional Work

Library publishing programs, on the rise in the last decade, help libraries more actively participate in the scholarly communications cycle, advance open access, and meet local needs related to the creation and dissemination of scholarship. Buzz and excitement surrounds this topic as part of a growing notion that publishing is an innovative function critical for the libraries of the future.

PALNI’s Library Publishing Task Force recently wrapped up its exploration of this emerging consortial service area, and in this webinar Amanda Hurford, Olivia MacIsaac, and Sue Wiegand discussed our findings and recommendations, including the creation of an Admin Team for …

Trade Associations For Industry Research, Teresa Williams Jan 2020

Trade Associations For Industry Research, Teresa Williams

Scholarship and Professional Work

Some of the most challenging questions asked by business researchers involve specialized industries. An entrepreneur may want to know about regulations impacting pawn shop owners, while someone else is seeking your help to identify major trends in the wind turbine industry. Or perhaps a student is looking for the market size for pet products with a breakdown for food and treats. An expensive market research report likely has that type of information, but for an answer that may not cost anything, try a trade association.

Faculty Format Preferences In The Performing Arts: A Multi-Institutional Study, Joe C. Clark, Jonathan Sauceda, Sheridan Stormes

Scholarship and Professional Work

Resources for teaching in higher education have undergone a tremendous evolution during the past several decades. The Internet and commercial services, such as YouTube and Google, have revolutionized the manner by which students and faculty access information to both conduct research and meet course requirements. This mixed methods study implemented an online survey and interviews to determine how performing arts faculty at three institutions integrate library resources and services into their teaching. Conclusions indicate that, while personal collections and Internet resources provide a majority of teaching content, the academic library still offers important access to materials for instruction.

Format Preferences Of Performing Arts Students: A Multi-Institution Study, Joe C. Clark, Sheridan Stormes, Jonathan Saucedac

Scholarship and Professional Work

The article describes a follow-up to Clark's 2012 examination of performing arts students' format preferences; it also explored their preferred sources for course-related information. This mixed-methods study was implemented at three institutions and included an online Qualtrics survey and focus groups. Results indicated a continued shift toward digital resources, with strong preferences for obtaining electronic journals and reference materials through the library. Print scores and books remained popular; however, students appeared more open to electronic options when compared to the 2012 results. Freely available online video and audio continued to enjoy popularity. Students want the libraries to acquire a mix …

Space Invaders: Programmatic And Individual Il Efforts Within A Core Curriculum, Sally Neal, Amanda Starkel

Scholarship and Professional Work

Butler University librarians are “invading” their University’s core curriculum with information literacy integrated on multiple fronts, both at the administrative programmatic level and via a ‘grass-roots,’ one-class-at-a time approach. Butler University upholds an extensive core curriculum required of all of its students consisting of a first-year seminar, a sophomore global historical studies course, and six content areas. Librarians have been engaged with the University’s first year seminar for a number of years and have been looking at how to expand our reach into other areas of the core. While not abandoning an intentional programmatic approach, we are finding a “space …

From The Aasl Standards To The Acrl Framework: Higher Education Shifts In Pedagogical Strategies, Jenni Burke Sep 2017

From The Aasl Standards To The Acrl Framework: Higher Education Shifts In Pedagogical Strategies, Jenni Burke

Scholarship and Professional Work

How does the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education function in relation to the information literacy standards used with students in K-12 schools and how does it inform academic librarians’ pedagogical strategies? While these documents are strongly related, there are large differences in their theoretical approach to information literacy, which are revealed in their definitions, treatment of dispositions, and approach to measurement. This leaves gaps in instructional approaches and student learning. Understanding these differences enables librarians in higher education to leverage the Framework to teach all students and fill in instructional gaps, regardless of how much information literacy instruction …

Anything Can Happen In The Zone: Library And Departmental Change Driven By Migration To A Cloud-Based Library Management System, Josh Petrusa

Scholarship and Professional Work

Butler University Libraries had already made progressive changes in public services areas, but Technical Services remained unchanged and bound to legacy practices from decades past. For us, the best catalyst for change was a system migration to a cloud-based type of management system. This system migration was tied to organizational restructuring and a new strategic plan, each of which intertwined with the details of the migration project and was underpinned by thoughtful analysis of how to help employees through change. Details of the migration are discussed in relation to how they inspired departmental and organizational change through updated technology.

Measuring Altruistic Impact: A Model For Understanding The Social Justice Of Open Access, Margaret Heller, Franny Gaede

Scholarship and Professional Work

INTRODUCTION Traditional assessment of ways in which open access initiatives and institutional repositories have provided a return on investment normally use pragmatic measures such as download counts and citation benefits. This pragmatic approach misses out on the powerful altruistic impact of improving access to international and/or marginalized communities. Using a frame of social justice, this article considers the importance of developing altruistic measures of repositories, particularly for institutions with missions specifically related to social justice and related themes. METHODS Using web analytics data for search keywords from eight institutions and geographic usage data from nine institutions, the authors were able …
