Literature reviews are the source of constant stress among doctoral and master level students and, at the same time, the most popular assignment among instructors. After teaching numerous workshops, webinars, Literature Review Bootcamps, and co-teaching “literature review modules,” I decided to create an interactive web-based learning tool, the Literature Review Design (LRD).

PhD students have unique needs and require different resources and services from the library than undergraduates, which is especially true of professionals in a nursing program. As clinicians, many do not have experience with the research and writing intensive requirements of a doctoral degree. The majority have not taken classes for years, and their master’s degrees were more hands-on, clinically-based. They often do not feel confident in their ability to search the literature, read closely, or write expansively. This session highlights graduate outreach services at the University of Central Florida and Clemson University libraries and compares institutional program approaches, outreach strategies, and the research needs of student populations in the Social Sciences and Engineering.

The presenters coordinate graduate outreach services at their institutions, and the first part of the presentation will include a discussion of each institution’s service model and each librarian’s role. George Washington University Libraries were tasked with transforming support for graduate students while taking into account increasing numbers of online students, off-campus programs, and students working full-time. In addition, due to librarian turnover and other factors, we needed to accomplish our goal with a reduced workforce and without reducing services and instruction to our undergraduate population. In response to changing needs of graduate students, the University of North Texas Libraries have created unique services, spaces, and instruction. The transformation began with the recent creation of the Library Research Support Services (LRSS) department, a department focused on serving graduate students. The department quickly identified needs that fell into two categories: everyday needs and academic lifecycle needs. The University of Houston (UH) is a Carnegie-designated Tier One public research university that strives to serve more than 7,000 graduate and professional students. Graduate students have been historically underserved by the UH Libraries, however, in recent years the Libraries have made expanding services to graduate students a strategic initiative.
