Finding Hidden Value Through Mixed-Methodology: Lessons From The Discovery Program’S Holistic Approach To Truancy Abatement, Holly Miller, J. Miller

Holly Ventura Miller

Policy makers often bemoan the shortcomings and inefficiency of youth development and similar social work programs whose effectiveness cannot be demonstrated by quantifiable performance indicators. This study argues, through illustration of the Odyssey Learning Center’s Discovery Program (an alternative school serving rural Southern youth in an abject poverty context), that program value can only be evidenced through a mixed-methodological evaluation design. Reasons precluding traditional statistical analysis and effectiveness determinations are discussed and alternative conceptualizations of program value are considered.

Sorry, But It's The Law: The Westernization Of Islam, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis Jul 2005

Sorry, But It's The Law: The Westernization Of Islam, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

The last quartile of the 20th Century vastly changed the religio-cultural landscape of the West. Previously the stronghold of Christianity, the West has entered into a period of deep diversity as a result of the unprecedented level of migration of non-Western, non-Christian peoples to western destinations. These new immigrants, with their foreign cultures and unfamiliar religions, came westward with the full expectation that they--like the diverse array of Christian emigrants who migrated westward decades before--would fully enjoy religious liberty in nations long heralded for their commitment to democratic principles and respect for civil rights. How are these immigrants faring on …

Understanding And Surviving An Aircraft Hijack, Brian Kingshott Jan 2005

Understanding And Surviving An Aircraft Hijack, Brian Kingshott

Brian F. Kingshott

Although aircraft hijacking (air piracy) incidents have decreased since the 1970s and 80s, the possibility of an incident occurring remains a threat that should not be ignored. In this paper, discussion will focus on a terrorist incident occurring whereby armed personnel seize an aircraft in flight and hold all passengers and crew as hostages. The common factors associated with acts of air piracy include, but are not limited to, high state of fear, apprehension, indecisiveness, as well as physical and psychological trauma. By knowing the possible actions, or reactions, of all involved will allow individuals to deal with this trauma.

Recovering Digital Evidence From Linux Systems, Philip Craiger Jan 2005

Recovering Digital Evidence From Linux Systems, Philip Craiger

J. Philip Craiger, Ph.D.

As Linux-kernel-based operating systems proliferate there will be an inevitable increase in Linux systems that law enforcement agents must process in criminal investigations. The skills and expertise required to recover evidence from Microsoft-Windows-based systems do not necessarily translate to Linux systems. This paper discusses digital forensic procedures for recovering evidence from Linux systems. In particular, it presents methods for identifying and recovering deleted files from disk and volatile memory, identifying notable and Trojan files, finding hidden files, and finding files with renamed extensions. All the procedures are accomplished using Linux command line utilities and require no special or commercial tools.
