Freshwater Springs Preservation In Jejudo: Reinterpretation Of Springs As An Ethnological And Environmental Resource, Chang-Yu Hong

On Jeju Island, there are many freshwater springs because it is a volcanic island with abundant precipitation and rainwater. While springs were once plentiful in the island, due to depletion and urbanization pressures, many of the traditional wood and rock structures and spaces surrounding springs have become severely deteriorated. Until the 1970s springs served as vital community resources for water provisioning for drinking and household use, agriculture and livestock. Wilderness Park, located in Lancaster County, Nebraska, is a public park of unique ecological and historical value to the city of Lincoln and to the surrounding region. The natural and historical features of the park present an opportunity to communicate environmental and historical topics that are relevant on local, national, and global levels, as well as inspire a lively sense of pride in the community. The problem is that many topics relevant to Wilderness Park are not currently being interpreted at the park, and that there are relatively few interpretive resources available to park visitors.

This research represents an attempt to identify creative strategies to develop the neglected downtown of Chicopee. As a recent citizen I noticed Tehran's urge for new kinds of public spaces. So, I initiated a dissertation that outlined a call for "protean space." Cities need protean spaces as a means to empower people, places that offer social interaction and support--spaces that are safe, accessible, and intriguing. Protean spaces empower people to create places for personal and interpersonal relationships, make social connections, gain information, and build trust across varied networks.

City streets are the most widely distributed and heavily trafficked urban public spaces. As cities strive to improve livability in the built environment, it is important for planners and designers to have a concise understanding of what contributes to quality streetscapes. The proportions and scale of buildings and trees, which define the three-dimensional extents of streetscapes, provide enduring, foundational skeletons. This paper discusses the authors’ use of a combination of methods to understand the engagement of special needs children with design features in sensory gardens of two schools in Britain. In addition to observation and behavior mapping, the authors interviewed landscape architects, teachers and therapists to anticipate the children’s behavior when experiencing sensory gardens. We report how these groups’ anticipations differed from what we observed. While the groups anticipated that aesthetic value relates significantly to users’ behavior in the garden, we observed that sensory value has a stronger bearing on the behavior.
