Between Myths And Reality--Macedonia Between Turkey And The European Union, Marija Đorđeska
Between Myths And Reality--Macedonia Between Turkey And The European Union, Marija Đorđeska
Dr Marija Dordeska
The spirit of Alexander the Great still stirs ghosts between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. Macedonia is on its way to the EU and Greece represents an obstacle for these processes in the aftermath of the name dispute and the Greek veto on the Macedonian membership in NATO and the European Union. The major asset Greece has in regards to Macedonia is the veto power over the future accession talks Macedonia could have with international organizations, especially with the European Union. Instead of Greece taking Macedonia under its wing, Macedonia continues to be perceived as a threat to Greek …

Wiki Leaks Revelations In Global Context—The War Between ‘Right To Publish’ And ‘Ethical Code Of Conduct, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr
Ratnesh Dwivedi
WikiLeaks is an international non-profit organisation that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources, news leaks, and whistleblowers. Its website, launched in 2006 under The Sunshine Press organisation claimed a database of more than 1.2 million documents within a year of its launch. WikiLeaks describes its founders as a mix of Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the United States, Taiwan, Europe, Australia, and South Africa. Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, is generally described as its director. The site was originally launched as a user-editable wiki, but has progressively moved towards …

From Nixon’S War On Drugs To Obama’S Drug Policies Today: Presidential Progress In Addressing Racial Injustices And Disparities, Cigdem V. Sirin
Cigdem V. Sirin
This study investigates presidential progress in addressing racial injustices and disparities within the context of the war on drugs. I argue that racial inequalities emanating from the war on drugs have been largely overlooked and at times aggravated by previous administrations. Although there have been some improvements in this regard since President Obama took office, more extensive policy reforms are needed to better remedy such inequalities. I also argue that the viability of a progressive presidency for racial justice vis-à-vis U.S. drug policies depends not only on the personal agenda of the president but also on a supportive public as …

Pepfar’S Declining Investment In Treatment, Matthew Kavanagh, Marguerite Thorp
Matthew M. Kavanagh
Since its inception in 2003, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has saved millions of lives through providing anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment to people living with HIV/AIDS. However, our analysis of publicly available PEPFAR operational plans shows that funding to AIDS treatment has actually fallen significantly since 2008 in both absolute dollars and as a portion of total budgets—just at a pivotal moment when investment could change the course of the epidemic.

A Critical Study Of Organizational Communication And Organizational Communication Theories- A Historical Perspective, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr
Ratnesh Dwivedi
Organizational Communication is the study that looks at human communication within and outside the organization. Conrad and Poole (1998) break the definition of organizational communication in parts, by first defining communication and then analyses the organization. These researchers define communication as “a process through which people, acting together, create, sustain, and manage meanings through the use of verbal and nonverbal signs and symbols within a particular context” (Conrad and Poole, 1998, p. 5). In the context of this book, Kenyans and their leaders are communicating their views and final decision through the ballot box to elect their third president, during …

Public Accountability And Media : Its Success And Failure In Performing The Role As A Force For Public Accountability, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr
Ratnesh Dwivedi
Media accountability is a phrase that refers to the general (especially western) belief that mass media has to be accountable in the public’s interest - that is, they are expected to behave in certain ways that contribute to the public good. The concept is not clearly defined, and often collides with commercial interests of media owners; legal issues, such as the constitutional right to the freedom of the press in the U.S.; and governmental concerns about public security and order. Several international organizations, like International Freedom of Expression Exchange, Freedom House, International Press Institute, World Press Freedom Committee and the …

Religious Soft Power As Accountability Mechanism For Power In World Politics, Sherrie Steiner
Religious Soft Power As Accountability Mechanism For Power In World Politics, Sherrie Steiner
Sherrie M Steiner
This case study of the Interfaith Leaders’ Summit(s) from 2005-2010 expands the concept of ‘soft power’ as an accountability mechanism to include religious soft power. The Interfaith Leaders exercise public reputational and peer accountability in relation to the G8/G20 leaders. The value of the dialogue process is not contingent upon political leader responsiveness. The significance of the religious accountability mechanism is ascertained by using a complex theoretical standard for assessing the legitimacy of global governance institutions against which observations are then gauged. The InterFaith Dialogue Mechanism shows increasing compliance with the complex standard between 2005 and 2010. The ongoing value …
On The Nature Of Anglophone Conservatism And Its Applicability To The Analysis Of Postcolonial Politics, Stefan Andreasson
On The Nature Of Anglophone Conservatism And Its Applicability To The Analysis Of Postcolonial Politics, Stefan Andreasson
Stefan Andreasson
This essay examines the nature and development of an Anglophone tradition of conservative political thought (conservatism). It considers how, in contrast to a more reactionary European tradition, conservatism has evolved over time in its variously diverging and converging Anglo-American historical and cultural contexts and what relevance – what analytical utility – this body of political thought may have today for understanding politics and socio-cultural developments in a postcolonial world beyond its Western origins. In considering the relative merits of conservatism as compared to other theoretical approaches, the essay asks whether this conservatism can offer a superior analysis of postcolonial politics …

Extract:
Dr Brett McCormick and Dr Jonathan H. Ping, as co-editors, have developed the idea for this book, the thesis, and have undertaken the publishing process. This collaborative work has arisen from common academic enquiry, experiences and interaction with PRC citizens in a joint effort to address the question: ‘How do we think anew for our global future?’ Bond University Press has been instrumental in transforming the symposia into a published work. From the many discussed, the thesis of this book has emerged as the one to be published for four main reasons. Firstly, it takes advantage of years of …

Examining The Effects Of Political Information And Intervention Stages On Public Support For Military Interventions: A Panel Experiment, Cigdem V. Sirin
Examining The Effects Of Political Information And Intervention Stages On Public Support For Military Interventions: A Panel Experiment, Cigdem V. Sirin
Cigdem V. Sirin
This study examines the formation and continuity of public support for military interventions as a function of political information levels and intervention stages using a panel experiment. The results demonstrate that politically informed individuals express less support for a military intervention at the beginning of that intervention compared to uninformed ones. However, as the intervention proceeds and casualties are incurred, the support of politically uninformed people decreases at a higher rate than does the support of the politically informed. As such, politically informed individuals demonstrate more stable levels of support across intervention stages. In addition, success or failure of an …

Waldo In The Light Of Austerity And Federal Debt Crisis, Part 2, Jan Kallberg
Waldo In The Light Of Austerity And Federal Debt Crisis, Part 2, Jan Kallberg
Jan Kallberg
Waldo’s predictions about the future for public administration describe five areas that would be problematic in the future: legitimacy, authority, knowledge, control, and confidence. Legitimacy includes not only that the government is legally legitimized but capable and focused on an intention to deliver the “good society.” Authority, according to Waldo, is the ability to implement policy with the acceptance of the people based on rationalism, expectations of public good, ethics, superior knowledge, and institutional contexts. Knowledge is institutional knowledge, the ability to arrange and utilize knowledge within the bureaucracy since coordination is the major challenge in knowledge management. Government has …

Waldo In The Light Of Austerity And Federal Debt Crisis, Part 1, Jan Kallberg
Jan Kallberg
Dwight Waldo wrote The Enterprise of Public Administration in 1979 looking back on a long and fruitful academic career, but also as a reflection about the future for public administration. Can a 30 year old book still be relevant? You bet. Today, the public sector is increasingly facing fiscal challenges. Federal, state, and local governments throughout the country have major budget deficits followed by austerity measures that undermine the ability to deliver the good life of the future. In this day and age rereading Dwight Waldo’s The Enterprise of Public Administration is an intellectual exercise worth pursuing. Several of Dwight …

West Africa & The Rise Of Asante: Rivers Of (Black) Gold And The Proto-Globalization Of Labor, Jon D. Carlson
Jon D. Carlson
This article examines the concept of the ‘external arena’ and the role of the ‘information network’ in the expansion of the world-system and incorporation of new regions. I reference research on nested networks of interaction, and echo criticisms that the impact of myth and misinformation has been underappreciated as an element of incorporation. Alteration occurs well-prior to the point at which most world-systems literature considers a region incorporated. I develop the concept of “protoglobalization” to characterize this early, overlooked social, economic, and political change.
West Africa offers a rare case of external state creation and resistance to European expansion. Historically, …

This paper examines the concept of the “external arena” and the role of the “information network” in the expansion of the world-system and absorption of new regions. Alteration occurs well-prior to the point at which most world-systems literature considers a region incorporated. Legal Mechanization Of Corporate Social Responsibility Through Alien Tort Statute Litigation: A Response To Professor Branson With Some Supplemental Thoughts, Donald J. Kochan
Legal Mechanization Of Corporate Social Responsibility Through Alien Tort Statute Litigation: A Response To Professor Branson With Some Supplemental Thoughts, Donald J. Kochan
Donald J. Kochan
This Response argues that as ATS jurisprudence “matures” or becomes more sophisticated, the legitimate limits of the law regress. The further expansion within the corporate defendant pool – attempting to pin liability on parent, great grandparent corporations and up to the top – raises the stakes and complexity of ATS litigation. The corporate social responsibility discussion raises three principal issues about how a moral corporation lives its life: how a corporation chooses its self-interest versus the interests of others, when and how it should help others if control decisions may harm the shareholder owners, and how far the corporation must …

Australia's International Education As Public Diplomacy: Soft Power Potential, Caitlin Byrne, Rebecca Hall
Australia's International Education As Public Diplomacy: Soft Power Potential, Caitlin Byrne, Rebecca Hall
Caitlin Byrne
Australia's international education serves as public diplomacy, essentially engaging and influencing public audiences in a way that progresses Australian foreign policy priorities and ultimately, national interests. The multidimensional and increasingly globalised nature of international education presents enormous opportunity for vital exchange and interactions between and with students, academics and communities via onshore and offshore modes of delivery. Positive experiences of exchange and the development of intellectual, commercial and social relationships can build upon a nation's reputation, and enhance the ability of that nation to participate in and influence regional or global outcomes. This is ultimately the essence of soft power. …
