We may be used to routines, but changes are inevitable as we have witnessed the evolution in library services and librarian workplace since the advent of the internet. The now taken-for-granted introduction of internet usage into the workplace changed the dynamics of work, productivity, and management, and this is now further complicated by the ubiquitous availability of personal cell phones, going beyond company supplied and (partially) controlled computers with internet connections. This paper studies the connection between internet and cell phone usage by employees and firm productivity. Using primary data collected via a self-reported survey, we conduct an empirical analysis utilizing information based on firm and industry characteristics. Results indicate that the level of non-work-related internet and cell phone usage is significantly associated with firm productivity. Some of …

From online embeds to interactive displays, timelines can serve many purposes and tell powerful stories. In this panel librarians discuss collaboration and how to bring history to life through displays, events and online platforms for engaging students and preserving community milestones. Four of our favorite tools for creating digital timelines and gathering content will be shared including Prezi, TikiToki, TimeToast, and Piktochart. Comparisons will be given based on cost, technical limitations, and general ease of use. Specific examples will also be shared and discussed.

This article explores collaborative technology training in public libraries. The Pew Research report on public libraries finds that libraries should ‘definitely’ offer training on new technology. Although it can be difficult to transform our spaces and programs into hands-on technology learning environments, this article explores several San Francisco Bay Area libraries which are responding to their communities’ needs and developing unique technology programming.

Survey approach was adopted drew sample of 24 respondents from four academic and four research libraries in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. UGA Law Library’s longstanding newsletter Amicus Briefs first saw circulation in 1984. Over a period of more than 30 years the publication has changed hands, formats and styles many times. Today the newsletter is published both electronically and physically, and in 2017 is now further expanding its reach via podcasting. This session will trace one library newsletter’s journey, sharing lessons learned along the way about platform and content choices, marketing and dissemination, and measuring readership. For every advance of information and communication technology in the 20thand 21st centuries, there has been gap between those who can readily adopt and benefit from it and those who cannot. As higher education becomes increasingly enmeshed in Internet-based learning, academic libraries will need to maintain and even increase digital literacy and fluency instruction in spite of presumed reduced need. Furthermore, academic libraries themselves will need to examine their own status in the divide.

Being a competent attorney means being a competent technologist. ABA Model Rule 1.1 (Competence) requires all lawyers to stay abreast of technology even if they still use a Dictaphone and typewriter and think “the cloud” refers to the fluffy white stuff in the sky. It can be malpractice to misuse or misunderstand technology, and this misuse can take many forms. Lack of familiarity with technology can lead to improper production of confidential information, delays in litigation, wasting time and client funds, ending up on Above the Law (and not in a good way), and more.
