This small group, case-based exercise is geared towards medical students on their pediatric clerkship. The goal of this session is to teach students how to re-frame their clinical questions into a format that allows for more effective and efficient searching of the literature.

Discovery tools such as Primo, EBSCO Discovery Service, Summon, and WorldCat Local aim to make scholarly research more intuitive for students in part because of their single interface for searching across multiple platforms, including the library, fee-based databases, and unique digital collections. Discovery tools are in sync with the way many undergraduates look for information because they offer a more “Google-like” experience in contrast with previous methods of research that required first knowing which database to use, then searching each one differently according to its specifications. Information literacy is recognized as an essential competency for educational success. It relates to all disciplines but is not a separate discipline, so it is not clear who takes responsibility for teaching this competency to undergraduates. This is a report of a survey conducted to better understand the extent to which teaching information literacy concepts by faculty occurred in a research university. The results indicated that faculty in the disciplines generally teach information literacy competencies to undergraduate students without collaborating with others on their campus. The availability of library-related videos is growing; yet it is difficult to justify the impact of such time-consuming projects. In order to investigate the impact of such projects and a possible solution, the researchers asked students to create videos that appeal to their peers. The following research questions were posed:

  • Will creation of media projects enable students to learn core research concepts and skills?
  • Will a series of peer-created media engage students and help them acclimate to researching in an academic library?

Every year we use assessment to improve library instruction for freshman English students. This presentation addresses the perennial problem that many instruction librarians face: “How can we assess student learning outcomes in a one-shot instruction session?” Loyola Marymount University’s Reference Department created a standardized introduction to the research process applicable to any topic, developed learning objectives, and measured them for three years. iPads are fun but they can also be a great tool for one-shot library instruction sessions. In conjunction with QR codes, a structured activity with these devices will get students out of the computer lab, working in groups to find the differences between scholarly and popular articles, primary v. secondary sources, and to use WorldCat Local to find their own sources. An 11+ year collaboration between faculty and librarians at a Michigan comprehensive (II-A) university evolved from individual innovation to a campus-wide program, Embedded Library Instruction Services (ELIS). The authors present their experiences implementing Summon, a web-based search engine similar to Google produced by the software company Serial Solutions, at Bowling Green State (BGSU) University Libraries (UL). The authors discuss using the teaching method of reflection, described by Char Booth in the book "Reflective Teaching, Effective Learning: Instructional Literacy for Library Educators," to train librarians, students, and faculty to use the software. The authors describe personal and group instruction, training undergraduates to use Summon for research, and alternative search tools such as the EBSCO Publishing database.

This resources describes a novel approach to outpatient morning report. This format encourages self-directed learning as well as teaches residents to use the clinical literature to ensure they were providing optimal patient care. Each resident daily chooses a clinical question from that day's patient care, investigates and brings the answer back to the group during morning report. This resource includes a description of the integration and implementation of this format as well as the handout used by the residents.

Many academic libraries and publishers have developed mobile-optimized versions of their web sites and catalogs. Almost all database vendors and major journal publishers have provided a way to connect to their resources via the Internet and the mobile web. In light of this pervasive use of the Internet, mobile devices and social networking, this study examines the habits of 290 science and technology students (with majors in biology (51%), chemical engineering (15%), biological engineering (9%), kinesiology (5%), and animal science (4%)), to identify whether they use this technology for library-related activities. This cross-cultural study has two main purposes: to investigate how information literacy is perceived in the workplace and to discover how employees obtain information to carry out their jobs in an effective and timely fashion. This project applies a mix of research methods, including site visits, interviews, and a survey. More than 120 participants from forty companies were involved in this study. According to the 2011 ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology report, "institutions and instructors do not fully harness [technologies] to create opportunities for more varied, inspiring, and beyond-the-classroom learning experiences." The challenge for libraries is how to use technologies to excite and provide experiential learning for students so that they can improve their information literacy skills. When we work with classes, we are often asked to “cover” MLA or APA style – what they hear from us does not meet their needs.

We have two approaches to share today: one takes a metacognitive tack that encourages students to make an individual plan to address what they find frustrating, and the other is a rubric that an instructor can use to clarify the expectations and to emphasize what elements of citation conventions are most important when they are grading.

In 2005 the authors reviewed citation help in databases and found an error rate of 4.4 errors per citation. This article describes a follow-up study which revealed a modest improvement in the error rate to 3.4 errors per citation, still unacceptably high. The most problematic area was retrieval statements. The authors conclude that librarians should include citation features in the evaluation of databases, and should open a dialogue with vendors about the importance of providing accurate, reliable information about citations to students.
