Photomicrographs, The Npr 100, And Student Teaching: Library Liaison Ideas That Really Work, Katherine Furlong, Janelle L. Wertzberger
All Musselman Library Staff Works
In 1997, Gettysburg College's Musselman Library revived a dormant liaison program. Librarians were assigned to each department and program on campus and expected to serve as the first point of library contact for the teaching faculty.
Some core communications and activities emerged that we now encourage every liaison to practice; attending department meetings, sending reviews of new materials, tracking faculty book orders, and visiting faculty offices are seen as standard liaison activities.
We were delighted to find that almost every librarian had some unique and interesting experiences to report. The authors collected these experiences so that they could be shared …

Applying Information Competency To Digital Reference, Lisa A. Ellis, Stephen Francoeur
Applying Information Competency To Digital Reference, Lisa A. Ellis, Stephen Francoeur
Publications and Research
Presented at the 67th IFLA Council and General Conference (2001), this paper presents a case for applying information competency (IC) standards to digital reference services at academic libraries. Practical reasons for applying standards or guidelines to e-mail and online chat reference services are given with some insight to the nature of digital reference interactions. The standards that arose from the information competency movement in academic libraries are described and offered as a touchstone for planning and designing digital reference services. The paper concludes with preliminary ideas for how IC standards could be applied to the provision of digital reference.

Integrated Academic Student Support Services At Loyola University: The Library As A Resource Clearinghouse, Elizabeth Orgeron
Integrated Academic Student Support Services At Loyola University: The Library As A Resource Clearinghouse, Elizabeth Orgeron
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
Higher education has seen the emergence of new models of student support services. These models vary greatly, ranging from those that, for example, simply streamline the registration process, to others that base new building construction on studies done about the information and service access needs of students.
In the recent past, colleges and universities have felt the impact of significantly higher drop out rates among freshman, and they have made attempts to assuage these rising attrition rates. Through extensive study of college campus culture and student needs, many institutions are changing long-standing protocols and adding a technology rich, user friendly …
Teaching Information Literacy In 50 Minutes A Week: The Crush Experience, Judith Faust
Teaching Information Literacy In 50 Minutes A Week: The Crush Experience, Judith Faust
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
The development of information literacy is central to the academic success of undergraduates, yet few universities require formal, credit-bearing courses taught by librarians to ensure that students develop these lifelong learning skills and abilities. Where such courses do exist, they are often isolated in the curriculum and rarely linked to the General Education experience. This article describes a General Education program begun in 1998-1999 at California State University, Hayward (CSUH), in which a cohort of students and faculty spend the year exploring a common theme in a series of linked courses, which include an information literacy class. Librarians teach a …

An Online Competency Test For Information Literacy: Development, Implementation, And Results, Lynn Cameron, Rebecca Feind
Faculty and Staff Publications
Librarians, faculty, and assessment specialists at James Madison University (JMU) collaborated to develop an online Information-Seeking Skills Test (ISST) to measure competencies relating to information literacy. In this paper we will report on how we developed and implemented the test as a required competency for all first-year students in General Education. We will also report on test results, challenges in implementing a competency test for all freshmen, our training program for faculty, and our remediation program.

Enhancing Women's Studies Action Research Projects Through Technology, Lucretia Mcculley
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
This article describes how library and Internet technology enhanced an action research assignment in a unique women’s studies program, Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL), at the University of Richmond. The Women’s Studies Liaison Librarian and the Director of the WILL Program collaborated to provide a meaningful assignment that incorporated the use of online databases and the Internet. The main objective of the assignment was to provide a research opportunity whereby the students would learn to use electronic women’s studies resources and actually utilize the information into some type of social action, such as writing a letter, volunteering in …
Historical Fabrications On The Internet: Recognition, Evaluation, And Use In Bibliographic Instruction, John A. Drobnicki, Richard Asaro
Historical Fabrications On The Internet: Recognition, Evaluation, And Use In Bibliographic Instruction, John A. Drobnicki, Richard Asaro
Publications and Research
Although the Internet provides access to a wealth of information, there is little, if any, control over the quality of that information. Side-by-side with reliable information, one finds disinformation, misinformation, and hoaxes. The authors of this paper discuss numerous examples of fabricated historical information on the Internet (ranging from denials of the Holocaust to personal vendettas), offer suggestions on how to evaluate websites, and argue that these fabrications can be incorporated into bibliographic instruction classes.
