(Forst paragraph) Our learners are as varied as the techniques we employ in information literacy classes. There is, however, one facet common to almost all of them, and it’s technology use. Let’s look at some recent numbers from the Pew Research Center. In the 18 to 29 age group, 94% of Americans own a smartphone, that number drops to just to 89% for ages 30 to 49.1 Tablets are also common, with 64% of Gen Xers and 54% of Millennials owning tablets.2 Spending time online also cuts across generations. This project report describes a collaborative effort between librarians, staff, local journalists and students at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA) to provide a venue for a discussion about ‘fake news’. Post-event questionnaire results are analysed to explore what students learned as a result of attending the event as well as student perceptions of their own understanding and ownership of the roles that they can play in the information cycle.

Asking Questions In The Classroom: An Exploration Of Tools And Techniques Used In The Library Instruction Classroom, Sara Maurice Whitver, Leo S. Lo

This study explores the tools and techniques used within the library instruction classroom to facilitate a conversation about teaching practices. Researchers focused on the questioning methods employed by librarians, specifically the number of questions asked by librarians and students. This study was comprised of classroom observations of a team of librarians working towards standardized learning outcomes; members of the team had the freedom to independently develop lesson plans and choose teaching approaches for each class. Observations measured the frequency of questions asked of and answered by librarians and students in library instruction sessions via oral discussion, worksheets, and polling. Researchers …

Social networking sites (SNS) have been integrated seamlessly into our everyday lives, and college students are one of their biggest consumers (Lenhart, et. al. 2010). Librarians at Old Dominion University (ODU) Libraries use the LibGuides platform in a creative way to meet immediate, practical needs. Traditionally, we have offered two types of information literacy tutorials. The first is a lengthy, module-based tutorial and is used in our information literacy-designated courses to cover skills in-depth and which students must complete over the course of a semester. The second is a short tutorial designed to give students an introduction or a refresher covering basic research skills, information literacy concepts, and library services.

Incorporating gaming and active learning elements into library instruction in academic libraries has proven to be an effective way to engage Millennials and increase their retention of knowledge. This article ties research on the learning preferences of Millennials to elements of active and game-based learning. The author describes the process of creating an innovative game based on Candy Land to teach undergraduates about information ethics and makes recommendations for creating non-digital games for instructional purposes based on this experience.

Students at remote sites must have consistent access to library informational and research materials in order to develop and broaden their understanding of the ideas and research in their disciplines, to bring new ideas to their off-site classrooms, and to acquire and develop their skills in research.
