"Research Papers Have Always Seemed Very Daunting" : Information Literacy Narratives And The Student Research Experience., Robert Detmering, Anna Marie Johnson

Robert Detmering

Taking an interdisciplinary approach that draws on narrative theory, composition scholarship, and investigations into the affective dimensions of the research process, this article discusses stories written by college students about their experiences locating, evaluating, and using information in the context of academic research. These narratives provide insight into how students conceptualize the research process and perceive their often tenuous roles as researchers. A textual analysis of a selection of student narratives is included, demonstrating how narrative not only enhances our understanding of the research experience but also enables students to raise larger questions about authenticity and power in the classroom.

This panel will provide an overview of Assessment in Action learning projects, which assessed library impact on student learning. Augustana College studied the effect of using original primary materials on first-year students’ information literacy and critical thinking skills. DePaul University investigated how independent learning activities allowed first year students to articulate how the library contributed to their success. Illinois Central College looked at library instruction’s impact on student success within sections of Composition ENG 111 (Composition II) courses. Illinois Institute of Technology examined whether intensity of library usage affected undergraduate student success.

More Than Just Where To Click, Heather Jagman, Troy Swanson

Heather Jagman

How do we move students beyond mechanical searching skills toward more sophisticated ways of understanding information? How can we encourage students reflect on their own beliefs and worldviews as they interact with sources? ACRL’s new title, Not Just Where to Click: Teaching Students How to Think about Information seeks to answer these questions. In addition to providing background on the editorial process, Swanson and Jagman will highlight the connections made by contributors and explore how authors provide a balance of theoretical and applied approaches to information literacy, supplying readers with accessible and innovative ideas ready to be put into practice.

Campus collaboration to embed information literacy learning outcomes into curricula, courses, and assignments is essential to achieving the academic library’s primary goal of developing information-literate learners. Panelists from a private, medium-sized university and a large public university with strong information literacy programs will bring attention to three categories of success articulated in ACRL’s Characteristics of Programs of Information Literacy that Illustrate Best Practices: A Guideline regarding planning, placement in the curriculum, and outreach.

Cass Kvenild

Classroom Assessment Techniques for Librarians provides the tools librarians need to quickly and meaningfully assess student knowledge in the classroom. The authors, Melissa Bowles-Terry and Cassandra Kvenild, share 24 tried and true assessment tools, along with library-specific examples, to help librarians assess students’ ability to recall, analyze, and apply new knowledge. The assessment tools in this book actively engage students by asking them to think, write, and reflect. Librarians can use results of these assessments as a starting point to define and measure information literacy learning outcomes as well as to improve their teaching skills and instructional design. While data driven decision making is a hot topic in librarianship, collecting, analyzing and interpreting data can be intimidating. Where and how to begin? Instruction librarians from Grand Valley State University will discuss how they scaled up from unshared, nonstandard evaluations to a standard form that would make participant perceptions of library instruction more widely accessible in order to make data driven decisions within the Instruction Program.

How can instruction librarians best utilize diminishing resources to support expanding information literacy initiatives on their campus? To be successfully implemented on campus, information literacy depends on collaboration between faculty and librarians. Participants will learn about using “train the trainer” methodology to advance and sustain information literacy programs at their home institution. In “train the trainer” workshops, faculty are educated about information literacy through classroom activities, guided discussions, and library resources. This session will present methods for collaborating with faculty in order to empower them to integrate information literacy and library resources into the curricula. Participants will learn about a …

Information Literacy In The New Core Curriculum, Elisa Slater Acosta Apr 2014

Information Literacy In The New Core Curriculum, Elisa Slater Acosta

Elisa Slater Acosta

Faculty and librarians at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) are partnering to embed important information literacy skills into the new core curriculum. Beginning fall 2013, every freshman at LMU will spend some mandatory time in their Freshman Seminar course developing basic information literacy skills. The same skills will be reinforced and enhanced in their Rhetorical Arts course the following semester. This will provide the foundation for students to later develop more advanced information literacy skills during a required course that has been “flagged” for information literacy at the upper level. This tiered and systematic approach will allow for a more consistent …

With the unique constraints that instruction librarians face in the classroom, we often rely on point-and-click instruction sessions that do not always communicate essential information literacy concepts. This program identifies key threshold and core concepts and correlates them with ACRL information literacy standards. The presenters highlight lesson plans that promote critical thinking and engaged learning and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate in the creation of a standard-aligned lesson plan.

Librarian and faculty collaborations are the most essential component of any successful information literacy program. How can librarians entice faculty to collaborate? A wide range of outreach strategies have been chronicled in the literature, including brown bag lunch discussions, faculty focus groups, librarian-faculty grants, librarian participation in faculty governance, and workshops. Collaboration can also occur as a result of accreditation or program review requirements. This session will focus on the method of hosting “train the trainer” workshops to present key information literacy concepts to faculty and stimulate ideas for embedding information literacy into the classroom. We will present a broad …

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen Dec 2012

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen

Suzanne E Zentz, DNP, RN, CNE

Background

An expectation of baccalaureate nursing education is to prepare nurses to implement evidenced-based practice (EBP). This expectation extends far beyond a basic understanding of the research process. BSN prepared nurses must be able to effectively and efficiently identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). The acquisition of information literacy skills is foundational to the development of EBP.

Implementation

The study took place at a College of Nursing within a mid-sized, faith-based university located in the Midwest. Historically, students enrolled in their senior level undergraduate nursing research/EBP course underwent one library instruction session with the nursing librarian to reinforce search …

Every year we use assessment to improve library instruction for freshman English students. This presentation addresses the perennial problem that many instruction librarians face: “How can we assess student learning outcomes in a one-shot instruction session?” Loyola Marymount University’s Reference Department created a standardized introduction to the research process applicable to any topic, developed learning objectives, and measured them for three years. Discover how we unlocked our freshman instruction gridlock! The presenter will highlight successes and potholes on the road to student learning. The Assessment Ride Share consists of: a worksheet and grading rubric, interactive online LibGuide, keyword self-quiz, pre-lesson …
