Previously, over 200 workshops were provided each Fall semester for all incoming students and for the first time in 4 years, those workshops were replaced with online instruction. This presentation will give an overview of the structure for embedding information literacy into Loyola Marymount University’s new core curriculum. The curriculum map for information literacy throughout the first-year core courses will be displayed, with an emphasis on how the performance indicators are iterative and help build a foundation for more advanced skills. Also, the first-year information literacy assessment plan, which ranges from mandatory online tutorials to a series of graded research assignments, will be presented. Students engage in a more disciplinary perspective of information literacy through a required “information literacy flagged” course taken during the sophomore or junior year. …

Objectives: For librarians developing a credit course for medical students, the process often involves trial and error. This project identified issues surrounding the administration of a credit course, so that librarians nationally can rely more upon shared knowledge of common practices and less upon trial and error. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to the education services librarian at each medical school listed in the 2000 AAMC Data Book. A second questionnaire was sent to those librarians who did not return the first one. Results: Of the 125 librarians surveyed, 82 returned the questionnaire. Of those 82, only 11 offered a …

Information literacy (IL) is the set of skills that enables a person to find, evaluate, and use information. Although IL is important in the geosciences, it is hard to teach because the information comes in so many forms. Most geoscience courses include work that implicitly addresses some IL issues. However, because of the importance of IL, it is worthwhile to explicitly include it as part of the curriculum. The Association of College and Research Libraries has developed Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education that may be used to assess an individual's level of information literacy. During summer 1997, instruction librarians at Pepperdine University's Payson Library began restructuring Freshman seminar library instruction sessions because they observed that students were not acquiring the needed library and information literacy skills. Too much material was being presented in too short a time with no opportunity for hands-on experience. Taking advantage of the opportunity for Web-based instruction, students now tour the library and learn catalog searching skills at their own pace outside of class. Librarians reinforce vital library skills and introduce the students to a general database during classroom instruction which includes hands-on experience.
